Sonic CD Menu Items
Sonic the Hedgehog CD was planned to be included in the collection, but was cut due to "space constrains" according to a GameSpot interview with Yuji Naka[1]. All that remains in the final game (and the prototype from August 15th) is a crude placeholder graphic with "ソニック CD" (Sonic CD) written in it found in sonic/data/gameselect.tpl, and the game's European manual found in sonic/data/manual/z_toc##.tpl (## followed by numbers 00 to 69), z_socdb0.tpl and z_socds0.tpl.
Sonic CD can be found in the Games and Manuals sections (with a description) in a prototype from August 15th, though it's not playable. Selecting the game results in Sonic the Hedgehog booting up instead. A port of the 1996 PC version would finally become playable in Sonic Gems Collection.
Demo Graphics
A number of assets related to a playable Japanese demo version of the game can be found in sonic/demo. While a demo version of the game was playable in Gekkan Nintendo Tentou 2002.12.1, it just recycles the same menus as the final game, leaving these graphics unused. Some things of note:
- The title screen uses the same visuals found in a prototype from August 15th.
- For the title screen images, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is blanked out, while Sonic the Hedgehog 3 isn't. In the playable demo, this is the exact opposite, where Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is playable, but Sonic the Hedgehog 3 isn't.
- The final screen after the demo ends (next.tpl) differs from what is used in the playable demo version. Even though next.tpl had its text altered, that demo also leaves this file unused in favor of demo_next_taiken.tpl.
