This prototype is documented on Hidden Palace.
Contents
General Differences
- Only the Paradox and Virgin logo FMVs are present at this point, the latter playing in place of everything else.
- Only four of the final 13 music tracks are present, possibly corrupted as they skip heavily when played. The tracks included are "Give To You", "Backlash", "Crawl" and the Thrill Kill/Game Over music. A fifth blank track is also present.
- The AI is generally less aggressive, even at higher difficulties.
- Opponents on the ground cannot be hit.
- Because some moves in Practice Mode will not register, some alternate outfits and the Gimp character cannot be unlocked normally.
- The unused announcer clips from the final version are not present.
- Same goes for Cleetus' "Yummy" clip, which wasn't added until after the August build.
File Differences
The following files present in the final version that are absent here.
- KILLS/TORTURE/REC_BLAM.RO1 Unknown.
- KILLS/APE/KIL_ODDB.ROT Unknown.
- KILLS/APE/KIL_MAMM.ROT Unknown.
- DOCTOR/JAW.DTA, A copy of the textures for Dr. Faustus' jaw. Seems to be used for the jaw he grafts onto his opponent as part of a thrill kill, which is functionally and visually identical to the final in this build.
- FRONT/KLUDGE.SPR & KLUDGE.DAT, these seem to contain some graphics for the Memory Card screens.
Additionally, one file that is absent in subsequent builds.
- SHARED/SHA_ANIM.H Unknown.

- While not noticeable in-game, the face texture for Judas' default skin was twice the width of the final. The blue/gray version of this texture for Judas' second half is also missing, but it is still displayed in-game as it appears in the final version.
DOCTOR1.DTA | DOCTOR3.DTA |
---|---|
- Two of Dr. Faustus' skins have additional textures, possibly remnants from an earlier version of the model as even in this version they are not actually used.
- FRONT/STILLS contain some screens from a demo version. While no public demo was released, the game was shown at E3 1998. These files were removed by the October 13th build.
Menus

- The warning on startup is different, as is the message if you choose not to play. These were both changed in the August builds.
Proto | Final |
---|---|
- In the prototype, you get asked if you wish to turn on autosave when you first start the game. From the August build onwards it instead automatically looks for existing save data.
Proto | Final |
---|---|
- Difficulty and Blood options were moved into the Other Options menu in the August builds.
Proto | Final |
---|---|
- "Memory Card" was simply referred to as "Card". This was changed for the final version.
Proto | Final |
---|---|
- The Sony and PlayStation logos were removed off the controller in the final build. "Dual Shock" was changed to "Vibration" as well.
Proto | Final |
---|---|
- The Game Over screen is on a black background in the final, while in the prototype it's overlaid on the game screen.
Character Select Graphics
The character select icons had the name of the character added to them by the August build. Most of the images were also altered, some showing earlier renders of the characters/skins.

Animation Differences
Proto | Final |
---|---|
- The basic finisher done by grabbing your opponent with Square was changed in the August build.
Proto | Final |
---|---|
- At end of his "Body Possession" thrill kill, the Imp is standing still instead of moving.
Proto | Final |
---|---|
- At the end of his default thrill kill, Judas stands still instead of moving.
- Judas' thrill kill combo animation glitches out halfway.
Proto | Final |
---|---|
- The blood spray at the end of Marukka's "Hell Hole" thrill kill is different.
Practice Mode
- Overall, button combos registering is quite spotty..
- The two sound effects unique to the Practice Mode are not present.
- Sound clips for the Practice Mode exclusive character, "The Gimp", are also missing. He is simply a reskin of the Tormentor and his textures are present in this build but as mentioned before, he cannot be unlocked.
- The "Information Display" option is missing from the menu.
- High and Low Counter are in every characters move list. They were taken out by the August builds.
Proto | Final |
---|---|
- The display in practice mode is slightly different. The checkmark was moved to the left and the button combo for the current move and last inputs switched places. Additionally, incorrect inputs briefly flash in red in the prototype and correct inputs are highlighted on the displayed combo.
Move List Differences
Tormentor
- "Chain Heater" is not in the final's list. Also in the August build as is. Unknown which move it is actually referring to.
Oddball
- The button combo for "Sitting Delirious" is incorrect. This was fixed in the August builds, before being removed from the final list.
Belladonna
- "Self Body Shock" is not in the final's list. Automatically skipped and marked as completed. Also in the August build as is. Unknown what the correct button combo is, or if the move itself is present in the final version.
Dr. Faustus
- "Chambered Stance" is automatically skipped and marked as completed. Fixed in the August builds, before being removed fron the final list.
Imp
Proto | Final |
---|---|
- "1 2 3 Little Punches" renamed to "1 2 Little Punches" in the August build.
Violet

First | Second |
---|---|
- "Pretzel Stance", "Super Extended Kick Out" and "Spinal Snap" are not present in the list. "Pretzel Stance" works (in the final version as well, pictured in the first screenshot) but the other ones don't seem to trigger. All three are present twice in the practice menu with different button combos: first between "Limp Limb" and "Hyper Heel", second between "Super Flex Float" and "Running Hip Rush". The same moves are still in the August build, and while the last two still don't seem to trigger an unique move, the game registers the button combo as completed.

- "Swinging Monkey", "Running Boulder", "Low Jab", "Tree Chopper" and "Jungle Greeting" have different button combinations which do not correspond to the actual moves. All but "Swinging Monkey" were changed to their final counterparts in the August build.
Proto | Final |
---|---|
- "Routed Up" was renamed "Up Rooted" in the August build. Uses a different button combo which also doesn't correspond to the correct move.
- "Jungle Drummer Attack" and "Rag Doll" are not present in the list, but both moves are still functional.
Cleetus
Proto | Final |
---|---|
- "Fillet of Calf" renamed "Filet o Calf" in the August build.
- "Choppin Wood" is not in the final's list. Still present in the August build as is. Unknown what the correct button combo is, or if the move itself is present in the final version.
Marukka
Proto | Final |
---|---|
- "Right Slash" renamed to "Demon Slash", not renamed until the final version.

---|---|
- "Left Slash From Crouch" renamed to "Slash From Crouch" in the August build.
