Proto:Threads of Fate
This page details one or more prototype versions of Threads of Fate.
A playable demo of Threads of Fate was included on the Squaresoft on Playstation 2000 Collector's CD Vol. 3 disc (labeled Vol.1 when played on the console). The demo skips the introduction scenes for both characters and their arrival at Carona, taking them straight to Carona Forest for the first mission, and ends when the first boss is defeated.

General Differences
Several changes were made to the character selection screen from the demo to the final version:
- Rue and Mint no longer "fall" into place.
- Demo does not include an option to continue, taking players straight to "starting a new game". Final version allows a player to load a save file.
- The background was changed from a fading blue to a more detailed surface for the characters to stand on.
- An ✕ Confirm button was added to the bottom-right corner when selecting an option.

Character Summaries
Each character has a quick summary of their situation and what brought them to Carona.
Rue's Story
Rue paces around the character select screen. As he talks, he passes by Claire while mentioning her. As the story takes a turn for the worse, Ruecian with the claw briefly appears, then Rue is shown alone again while he declares his intentions.
It's been 3 years already, but she's still always on my mind. She was so kind and gentle... so warmhearted, like the soft spring sunlight. I was happy just to be with her. But... Now she's gone. She was taken away from me... taken someplace far away. There's only one way to get her back. I have to find the [relic]. "I'm gonna save Claire, no matter what."
Mint's Opening Story
Mint paces around the character selection screen (which turns orange). She passes by her sister Maya and an alternate version of herself getting flattened by a pumpkin.
I used to be a powerful princess. Now... I'm a homeless bum. It's all my sister's fault... She kicked me out of my home 2 years ago to claim my right to the throne. DANG IT!!! Just thinking about her makes me wanna scream! She is sooo dead! Once I get the [relic], it's all over. With the [relic], I'm gonna rule the world!!!
Demo Endings
Each character has a short blurb after they defeat the boss and enter the atelier.
Rue
I don't know what dangers lie ahead... But I'm not turning back. Claire is waiting for me. I have to find the [relic]...
Mint
Wow, look at this place... There's gotta be some clues in here about the [relic]. I've got a long ways to go, but I'm not gonna quit until I fine the [relic].
Dialogue Changes
While Rue's dialogue is the same in both the demo and final, Mint's dialogue is different during the encounter with the brutes.

Audio Differences
During Mint's fight with the Gargoyles in the demo version, a "healing" sound effect is missing when a Gargoyle revives.
Unused Content
This unused content cannot be accessed under normal circumstances and requires a memory editor to adjust flags and player stats to see certain things. This content appears in the final version of the game.
- All monster coin data is intact.
- "Meeting Elena"'s alternate dialogue is included. One of the flags must set to 5 for this event to happen.
- All of Rue's transformations are included.
- Rue can enter the small cave in the descending cliff area. Rue's Bubba transformation (#15) must be hacked in to break the boulder that blocks the path, then transform into Stinger to enter it. Little Bats are present and are quite deadly at this stage of the game, but a Star Stone may still be obtained.
- All of Mint's spells are intact.
- Mint's [Circle] magic can be obtained in the descending cliff area. Dark magic spell Graviton (#34) must be hacked in to break the boulder that hides the spell.
- It is possible to descend down the tree stump in the second "area" of Carona Forest if the "Used Dream Stone" flag has been set to 128 and the "Story Progression" flag is set to at least 12. However, the room does not appear to be included in the game and will crash a few seconds after the trip is made.
