This page details one or more prototype versions of The Chaos Engine (Amiga).
One Level Demo Mix was a demo of The Chaos Engine released on the cover disks of Amiga Format Issue 40 and Amiga Action Issue 38 in November 1992.
The demo is based on the map used for World 1 Map 4 ("Rockies") in the final with largely identical gameplay, but a few secrets moved around and some enemies in different places.

Graphical Differences
- There is no teleport effect when players go through the exit; they simply disappear.
Demo | Final |
---|---|
- "A Bitmap Brothers Game" is blue rather than yellow, and uses a slightly different font.
Demo | Final |
---|---|
- The projectile-lobbing "thumper" enemies are a greenish-blue colour rather than yellow as in the final game.
Audio Differences
To do: Rip the demo music and different speech. |
- The powerup collection voice-overs are sometimes different takes. They also reveal that the final's samples were sped up.
- There are sound effects for bullets hitting walls and for the characters climbing up stairs. These are not used in the final, likely because they constantly interrupt the limited music channels on the Amiga's Paula chip.
- The music is very similar apart from one key factor - the main loop has a burbling TB303-style synth bass all the way through it that is not present in the final. It was likely removed as it's constantly interrupted by the sound effects and its long sample length makes it more noticeable.
- The buzzing electricity sound on activating a node is missing from the demo.
- The demo includes the files for the shop music, even though the shop itself is not actually accessible.
