How about a nice leek in this trying time?

So very stubbly.
This page is rather stubbly and could use some expansion.
Are you a bad enough dude to rescue this article?

This early prototype of Terraria is one of two prototypes leaked on 4chan. This version is more of a tech demo, but a surprising amount of the assets are unchanged from release 1.0.

This prototype along with its later build can be downloaded from archive.org

Gameplay Differences

  • The player is named "Some n00b".
  • There is no main menu, you load straight into a randomly generated world.
  • There is no options menu, pressing escape simply opens and closes your inventory.
  • Fall damage is absent.
  • Items are dropped from the player, like in Mediumcore mode. Items in the belt remain at death.
  • This uses an older world generation method, very different from the release version. It also lacks the generation of chests, biomes (except for forest), mines, dungeons, and other objects.
  • There are no debuffs or buffs, and healing is possible only by eating mushrooms.
  • No liquids are present.
  • Enemies do not despawn when offscreen, which increases slowdown.
  • There seems to be just under 40 items present in this build:
    • Dirt and Stone Blocks, Stone Wall
    • Wood, Wooden Sword, Door, and Torches.
    • Gel, Mushroom
    • Copper, Iron, Silver, and Gold Ore/Ingots.
    • Pickaxes, Axes, Hammers, Broadswords, and Shortswords for all four metal types.
    • Black and Green Tunics, White and Blue Pants.
  • Collected wood cannot be placed as blocks, unlike later builds.
  • The three Watches as well as the Depth Meter are not present in this build, instead replaced by clothes.

Blue Pants
  • There are only five enemies: Slimes in Green, Blue, Red, Purple, and Yellow varieties.
    • The slimes are always aggressive, even during daytime on the surface.
    • Slimes are spawned at night, in this build.
  • Left Alt, or Right Alt + Enter, will toggle fullscreen.

Crafting Recipes

The Work Bench, Furnace, etc., are not present in this build, so items normally made using them (Doors, Ingots, Weaponry, etc.) can be crafted in your inventory.

Notes:

  • The last field of each table indicates the total output of the recipe.
  • A red line between two ingredients means either one(s) can be used, not that both need to be used.

Graphical Differences

  • Earlier versions of textures, animations, doors, and armor are used.
  • There are no background blocks.
  • The character's standard clothing was listed as armor and could be taken off.
  • There was no parallax background - only the sky.
  • The lighting was rough.
  • The character sprites and animations are completely different.

Misc. Differences

  • This build features no music.
  • "Terraria: Dig Peon, Dig!" is the only available window title.
  • The Windows executable uses an Xbox 360 controller for its icon rather than the lone tree of later releases.
    • The Xbox controller icon only has one size – 32 x 32 pixels – while the tree icon has five sizes ranging from 16 x 16 pixels to 128 x 128 pixels.
Pre-Alpha Apr. 26, 2011 onward
Xbox! Play Terraria! The oldest tree in Terraria stands alone.
  • Curiously, the game has a "maxPlayers" variable that's set to 16.

Code Features

  • The game contains a "dumbAI" boolean, and enabling it overrides the AI of all enemies, making them motionless.
  • There is also a "godMode" boolean, that, unsurprisingly, makes you immune to all damage.

Debug Mode

The game features a debug mode, with a very limited set of features.

  • The camera controls no longer follow the player, but they are manually controlled with the arrow keys.
  • You can hold down right click, and then tap left click to spawn a Yellow Slime at the cursor.
  • Holding down right click will rapidly place torches along a valid block face.
