Notes: A lot of things need to be added, some final screenshots to compare with the prototype, rewording, etc.

This is a sub-page of Proto:Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Genesis).

The 0524 Prototype build of Knuckles in Sonic 2 is the current earliest known prototype of the game. It was released by drx in the February 23rd, 2008 prototype dump, along with the other Knuckles in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 prototypes.

This prototype is the only prototype that can be played individually. The rest of the builds must be attached to the beginning of a Sonic 2 ROM. Merging these two ROMs emulates the use of Lock-On Technology.

The KNUCKLES THE ECHIDNA IN banner above the title screen emblem isn't implemented yet, but the emblem still descends to make room for it. Graphics for the banner do exist in the ROM however, even though they go unused. The PRESS START text is positioned slightly lower than in the final.

When Knuckles goes Super in this build, it still uses Super Sonic's palette. The final uses the palette from Sonic & Knuckles.

When the Super form wears off, Knuckles mistakenly uses Sonic's regular palette. This is fixed in the final.

Oddities

  • Knuckles acts rather erratically in the demos.

  • In Casino Night Zone Act 1, using the leftmost flipper to go to the very top-left corner of the level will make the game freeze (though this can be avoided by holding Left while rising from the flipper). This is caused by the developers of Sonic 2 forgetting to properly terminate the level's bumper layout data, which miraculously doesn't cause a crash in the original Sonic 2 due to nearby code coincidentally resembling a data terminator. This is not the case in Knuckles in Sonic 2, causing the surrounding code to be treated as bumper layout data and crashing the game. Later versions of Knuckles in Sonic 2 fix this by properly terminating the bumper layout data.
