Proto:Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (GameCube)/Paper Mario 2 Demo/Text & Dialogue

From The Cutting Room Floor
Jump to navigation Jump to search

This is a sub-page of Proto:Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (GameCube)/Paper Mario 2 Demo.

Although the dialogue is very similar to the final for the most part, there are still some very interesting differences. The early dialogue, in turn, gives some hints about where the game's localization was in development at this point.

Some text that can not be accessed in the demo, such as Trouble Center sidequests or end of chapter dialogue, has been translated. Despite this, the files still contain lines upon lines of untranslated Japanese text.

Star Crystal Fields & Hooktail Castle Enemies

One of the hugest differences in the enemy tattles is that none of the text in the demo states their statistics.

and use it to replenish their
own! Isn't that just the worst?
btl_hlp_chorobon
I mean, EW! Doesn't that just
sound gross?
btl_hlp_chorobon
The only way to stop them
from draining your HP is by
doing the Action Command...
btl_hlp_chorobon
That's a Fuzzy.
What a hyper little guy, huh?
Cut back on the caffeine!
btl_hlp_chorobon

Demo Final
btl_hlp_sinnosuke
That's a Bald Cleft.
Looks totally rugged, huh?
btl_hlp_sinnosuke
Their bods are super-hard,
but if you use a POW Block to
flip them over, they're done.
btl_hlp_sinnosuke
Oh, and it says here that
flames have no effect, so
don't bother using any.
btl_hlp_sinnosuke
That's a Bald Cleft.
Basically, a rock monster
with a swarthy-looking face.
btl_hlp_sinnosuke
Uh... This is kind of mean,
but bald guys...really just
don't do it for me.
btl_hlp_sinnosuke
Fire doesn't even hurt it.
It might be best to attack
with, say...a POW Block.

Tattle for a Bald Cleft.

Demo Final
btl_hlp_togedaruma
That's a Bristle.
Totally covered in spikes.
btl_hlp_togedaruma
Even trying to get close
enough to whack it with a
Hammer is dangerous!
btl_hlp_togedaruma
Seriously, its spikes will
pop out!
btl_hlp_togedaruma
So, since you can't jump on
it or use your Hammer, I guess
all that's left is items...
btl_hlp_togedaruma
That's a Bristle.
...Totally covered in spikes.
They're so prickly!
btl_hlp_togedaruma
Even trying to get close
enough to whack it with a
hammer is dangerous!
btl_hlp_togedaruma
Seriously, its spikes will
totally pop out!
btl_hlp_togedaruma

it or use your hammer...
you'd better use an item!

Demo Final
tl_hlp_gold_chorobon
That's a Gold Fuzzy.
Whoa, those are super-rare!
tl_hlp_gold_chorobon

a Fuzzy, it won't suck up your
HP, which is nice.
tl_hlp_gold_chorobon
It has a lot of HP, but its
attacks aren't very powerful.
Sorta wimpy, y'know?
tl_hlp_gold_chorobon
That's a Gold Fuzzy.
Whoa, those are super-rare!
I'm serious! Wow!
tl_hlp_gold_chorobon
Oh, but hey! Even though it's

Says here these are special.
btl_hlp_red_honenoko
If you knock their HP down
to zero, they crumble...but
they revive! Like zombies!
btl_hlp_red_honenoko
It's probably best to beat
the ordinary Koopa Skeletons
before going the red ones...
btl_hlp_red_honenoko
Hey, and remember, Koopa
Skeletons can create
reinforcements, so watch out!
btl_hlp_red_honenoko
That's a Red Bones!
A little TOO red, I think.
No fashion sense, y'know?
btl_hlp_red_honenoko
Unlike your average Dull
Bones, even if you pound it
to O HP and it crumbles...
btl_hlp_red_honenoko
It totally might revive!
Like a zombie!
btl_hlp_red_honenoko
My advice is to get rid of
all the Dull Bones, then
attack the Red Bones.
btl_hlp_red_honenoko
Oh, and one more thing! Once
its friends start to fall, it
may create some more!

Tattle for a Red Bones.

Tattle for an X-Naut Soldier.

Demo Final
btl_hlp_barriern
That's a Yux.
Weird shape, huh? ...Ugly.
btl_hlp_barriern
According to this, sometimes
attacks and items don't
affect them, so watch it.
btl_hlp_barriern
Until you beat any Mini-Yux
surrounding them, you won't
hurt them at all. Cheaters!
btl_hlp_barriern
They shoot two beam types
from their mouths, so study
them to plan your defense.
btl_hlp_barriern
That's a Yux.
Says here it's a creature
created in the X-Naut labs.
btl_hlp_barriern

A creature made to protect
a Yux, it can split into two.
btl_hlp_barriern_petit

to beat them before the Yux.
Flurrie's pretty effective...

  • "Coin" is not capitalized.
  • The Magical Map is rather generically known as the "Treasure Map".
  • "Thunder Bolt" is one word, without the space. Changed for consistency with the first game.
  • The Repel Cape and Fright Mask use their localized names from the first game. These were likely changed to accommodate their icons not resembling a tube of gel or a jar in this game. This is because their Japanese names, unlike the English ones, don't explicitly indicate what kind of object they are.
  • Ruin Powder is known as "Subversion Syrup". While "Subversion" is a slightly more accurate translation of madowase (confusion/leading astray), kona doesn't mean anything except "powder".
  • Courage Shell is called "Courage Cola". This is a mistranslation: Someone mistook コウラ (koura, "shell") for コーラ (kōra, "cola"), and translated it as such.
  • The unused item "Trade Off" is bizarrely known as "Quick Thick". Neither of these match the Japanese name (テキツヨクスルン, Teki Tsuyoku Surun) or the internal one (Teki Kyouka), both of which roughly translate to "strengthen enemies".
  • Slow Shroom's name is "Gradual Shroom", to match the Gradual Syrup.
  • The Inn Coupon has three English names across two languages. Impressive.
  • Tornado Jump (たつまきジャンプ, Tatsumaki Jump) was mistranslated as "Hurricane Jump". Interestingly, tatsumaki is misspelled in the internal name-- for the record, tamatsuki means "billiards".
  • "Fire Blast" was likely changed because it sounds more like a projectile move than a melee one.
