Proto:Meat Boy

This page details one or more prototype versions of Meat Boy.

The following is from the Vertigo prototype found in the "This is A Cry For Help" game compilation.

General

  • The "Instructions" option in the main menu does nothing.
  • You can only quit a level by hitting Esc during the death, or win screens as the pause menu is not implemented.
  • If you stay at the bottom while the screen scrolls up you won't die, unlike the final where you will die.
  • Band-Aide Girl used to just be one goal that could vary in size.

Death Screen

Dying originally showed a screen saying "You Died :(" where you must hit ↵ Return to retry, the final instantly restarts upon death. Interestingly the code for this death screen remains in the final build of Meat Boy.

Custom Map Compatibility

When loading a custom made map created in Vertigo into any final version of Meat Boy, it will flash between all of the backgrounds while a prompt to title your map is present. The tiles placed appears to be in the same location, but is missing Meat Boy and Band-Aide Girl. After saving, and loading this imported map the game will have the same effects, having Meat Boy be stuck in the corner.

Importing a custom map from the final game into Vertigo initially shows the same results, but minus the flickering background due to a lack of more than one background. Saving this map and playing it shows it as actually playable, though Band-Aide Girl will be replaced with an invisible solid tile while all of the game's available tiles will forever flicker in the upper right corner. Touching this glitchy tile does nothing.
