Proto:Gran Turismo (PlayStation)/Test Drive Disc
This is a sub-page of Proto:Gran Turismo (PlayStation).
The 2nd demo of the first Gran Turismo, the Test Drive build was distributed as the second disc of Pure Pure Volume 8, a series of PlayStation demo discs in Japan; the demo is also known to have been distributed separately with a different product number. This build is very early in development, showing many differences to the final version.

Playable Content
This demo allows the player to drive the Honda NSX (1997 3.2 model) and Honda Civic SiR-II on High Speed Ring for three laps, without any time limit. The Gran Turismo Mode allows limited access to the Toyota dealership.
General Differences
Test Drive Version | Final Version |
---|---|
- There are billboards with a single checkered pattern logo with the text that reads "GRAN TURISMO" and "DRIVING SIMULATION GAME" above the logo scattered around the circuits in this demo. This is likely an early logo design concept, which had already been replaced with the final logo in some places. Some of the early logo concepts can still be seen in the Arcade Mode track previews (for certain courses only) and in the main title screen.
- Effects when the player's car point of view was changed during races were cut from the final version.
- Aston Martin and Chevrolet cars have not yet been modeled.
- It is possible to force an eight car race (thirteen in the night tracks); however, the cars loaded into memory at the start of the race is still six, and as such the extra cars will have darker textures.
- The title menu is technically part of the GT Mode menu, hence why there is no delay when you move from the title menu to GT Mode's map (and vice versa).
Tracks
- Pit roads are open and non-functional in every track.
- High Speed Ring was originally set at dusk, and the grandstands at the straight after turn one were just walls. The dusk skybox was used in License Tests B-6 and B-7 in the final version, although some overhead advertisements were removed to obscure this fact.
- The second tunnel and the bridge on Grand Valley Speedway were originally longer. Also, a Honda billboard in a turn after the last tunnel was removed from the final version. Additionally, a building in the final corner was missing.
- Grand Valley East had less tyre walls.
- Autumn Ring Mini had more trees.
- Some circuits had less billboards compared to the final version.
- The home straight on Test Course had the meter markers positioned on the right wall rather than overhead. Also, the road-pit divider was made from concrete rather than grass.
- In Special Stage Route 5, there are trees instead of fences in the section after the tunnel.
- The underpass chicane in Special Stage Route 11 had different barriers. More construction buildings existed in this version, too.
- Trial Mountain's starting grid was originally slightly tilted, probably the result of a coding error.
- Apex billboards were removed from Special Stage Route 11. Some buildings/details were also removed from said track.
Changed and Removed Cars
- Cars could originally have more than two RM color schemes in this and the Trial Version build.
- The Subaru Impreza WRX WRC was meant to be the original special Subaru model, but the decals in the car were changed, transforming it into the Subaru Impreza Rally Edition in the final game.
- Some cars appeared cruder and had different rims, not to mention having different color choices. In particular, many race cars have their windshield decals left empty.
- Due to an error, the TVR Griffith Blackpool B340 is listed as 4WD in this demo. In addition, the Griffith has a narrower rear license plate, fitting to the Japanese license plate size instead of British size.
Changed Racing Modifications
To do:
|
Several racing modifications had different designs. Noticeably, the racing modifications of the Nissan Pulsar GTi-R, 1996 Honda Civic 3-door, and Toyota Celica SS-II, which had a Rothmans logo (as well as Olivetti, a brand of calculators and computer equipment, in the Celica and Civic, and on Pulsar and Civic only, Lancia, a car manufacturer that eventually appears in Gran Turismo 2). These logos were all removed and the racing modifications were redesigned due to licensing issues and to avoid controversy of advertising tobacco products in a video game (related to the Rothmans logos, after the legal incidents of Final Lap and Super Monaco GP years ago), except for the Celica SS-II in which both the Olivetti and Rothmans writings were made less legible in the final version.
Here are some cars that had their racing mods completely redesigned in the final game:
- Honda CRX
- Honda Civic EG and EK
- Every Honda NSX
- Mitsubishi GTO Twin Turbo '95
- Subaru SVX
- Nissan 180SX '94
- Nissan Fairlady Z Z32
- Nissan Pulsar GTi-R '91
Here are other changed racing mods:
- Honda Accord Sedan '96- The front end's design went through minor changes, and some logos on the rear were removed. It also has two different color schemes on this demo, a black and blue one, and a purple and green one, though an early version of the black and green color scheme remains.
- Honda Accord Wagon '96- The Accord Wagon's racing mod looked slightly different. There was more green in the front bumper / hood area, and the red stripes next to the Castrol logo on the side were originally slightly titled.
- Honda Civic Ferio '96- The Honda logos on the hood originally were placed on both sides of the big H, while in the final they're underneath it. The Honda logos on the black color scheme were bronze, and it also had an extra color scheme, which is bronze and black with red Honda logos. The extra color scheme only exists in this build.
- Honda Integra- The green color scheme had a blue Castrol logo on the front, but this could possibly be an error, as the green color scheme is the only one that exists in this build, meaning that the second color scheme might have just started development at this point.
- Mitsubishi Eclipse- The stripe on the hood of the racing modded Eclipse was originally yellow.
- Mitsubishi Galant- Similar to the Eclipse, the Mitsubishi logo on the hood of the Galant's racing mod was also yellow.
- Mitsubishi GTO '92- The color schemes used different shades of red and blue, and a Castrol logo was originally present on the hood, which was replaced with a Mitsubishi logo later on.
- Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IV GSR- The yellow color scheme originally shared the same shade of yellow as on the Evo III'S racing mod.
- Most Subaru Imprezas- Most Imprezas originally had a more accurate to actual rally cars design with STi logos present on the back and sides, replacing the 555 logos on the actual car, but were replaced with the design used in the 1996 model in the later builds. Repsol appears as a sponsor in the windshield and the bumpers, which were removed from the windshield and made illegible in the bumpers.
- Subaru Impreza WRX STi '96- This one has Subaru logos rather than STi logos, but the blue color scheme used a darker shade of blue.
- Nissan 180SX Type X '96- Was dark purple rather than pink, and more Nissan logos were present in this build.
- Nissan Silvia K's '95- The color of the first color scheme was originally grey, but changed to white in the final version.
- Nissan Primera '95- The green color scheme was a lighter shade of green in this demo, as well as on the Trial Version.
- Toyota Celica SS-II- Some of the logos on the side of the car were different, and the rear spoiler was a different color on this version.
- Toyota Corolla Levin AE86- The color of the stripe on the middle of the body and the bottom of the body were inverted in this build. The "86" in the car number box was missing, and so was a stripe on the hood. A TRD logo was removed on the left rear quarter panel as well. The second color scheme was purple here also.
- Toyota Supra JZA70/MA70- The second color scheme on both old Supras was also purple here.
- Toyota Sprinter Trueno '97- Similar to the Celica SS-II, it had different logos on the side and a different colored rear spoiler.
- Toyota Sprinter Trueno AE86- The hood was originally the same color as the body, and the second color scheme was blue and yellow here.

License Tests
License tests are fully coded and functional in the game, but only the B-License tests exist. Even then, time limits have not yet been coded, and if the player goes off-track, the game simply issues a lap time of 59:59.99 instead.
Use the following GameShark code to replace the Map button on the sidebar (while in Toyota dealership) with the Go Race menu to go to the Go Race menu screen, then select the Map button and then License (WARNING: disable the code before starting a license test, otherwise the game will crash):
8003FC40 414D 8003FC42 2E50 8003FC54 5447 8003FC56 2E46 800824C5 414D 800824C7 2E50 800824E3 5447 800824E5 2E46
The following changes are noticeable.
- B-1: The Demio used has gray bumper and the test description mentions Honda Civic (シビック) in the test, suggesting that a Honda Civic was considered for this test.
- B-2: The Honda Civic (シビック) from the previous test is mentioned again.
- B-4: The S13 Silvia is used instead of the kouki S14 Silvia, even though the kouki S14 is already modelled.
- B-6: The GPX trim of the FTO is used instead of the GP Version R one.
- B-7: As with B-4, the S13 Silvia is used instead of the kouki S14 Silvia.
- B-8: The test still goes for three laps, and the text calls for a time limit of one minute and four seconds, which is impossible to attain given the condition since the Test Results time is the total time. (Not that it matters anyway, since this build does not check your times whether you passed or not yet.)
- B-1, B-2, B-3 all do not have a defined time limit in the test description text.
- Leaving the Quick Menu, including by choosing Next Session at the end of B-8 test, sends you back to the title menu.
Debug Information
Use the following GameShark code to enable some sort of debug information during a race; what they do is currently unknown. This feature is carried over the following build; no other Gran Turismo game would have any debugging-related things until Gran Turismo 4, although the menus in that game is primarily for screen display and kiosk configuration.

Car Stats Differences
Car Prices
All new car prices were adjusted to be exact to reflect their prices when they were sold brand new in Japan. In addition, all Special Model cars are two times pricier in this build, and the only foreign cars in this build, the Dodge Viper RT/10 and TVR Griffith Blackpool B340 had a price of zero.

Almost every build of the game, demo or retail, would end up making changes to the Honda Special Model car...
