This page details one or more prototype versions of Blockland.

Here are all of the known "prototype" versions of Blockland from before its first Retail release in February 2007.

Freeware

Blockland started out as a freeware prototype, but only one version has been preserved.

v0002
Released in November 2004, this was the first version of Blockland to gain significant popularity.

Beta

After v0002, development on a v0003 began, however focus shifted in March of 2005 towards creating a Retail release of the game to be properly sold. Starting in May 2006, the first beta testers were chosen and were given testing versions of the game.[1]

Some important notes:

  • Beta versions had their own versioning system - we can assume they started on a v1, but the highest version number known about is a v27.[2]
  • All beta testing versions were intentionally stripped of all server-hosting functionality, as these versions were only supposed to connect to one central dedicated server hosted by the game's creator. This server functionality is required for even singleplayer play, therefore these clients cannot load into any game without a beta server to connect to, which was never released. This means a lot of the in-game gameplay functionality cannot be compared.
