Actions

No automatic camera

The camera wouldn't automatically rotate behind Link after a brief moment had passed.

Items

Power: How about magic?

Miyamoto: The magic system is one of the few things that isn't finished yet. You'll be able to apply different types of magic to weapons on the item screen. If you apply fire magic to the bow, you can use a fire bow.

Sword

Master Sword

July 1998 Final
OoT-Master Sword July98.jpg OoT-Master Sword July98 Comp.png

Link's Master Sword used to use different shading approach (flat shading), which made the texture reflect oddly compared to the final game model.

A beam attack of some sort is demonstrated. It is unknown how this was performed.

Magic Spin Attack

The Magic Spin Attack looks the same as the final game now.

It seems that Malon didn't originally give you a hint about where to find her father.

Ingo (Past)

Prototype Final
OoT-Past Ingo July 98.jpg OoT-Lon Lon Ranch 3 Jul98 Comp.png

The race track's starting line is not present, and the gate uses some earlier textures.

Ingo calls Ganondorf 大魔王 (Daimaō) in the final, which in the English translation is 'great' or 'Evil King'. This pre-release image notably has the actor debugger enabled for it, further explanation here. The message is in the same location as the final, however.

Environments

Revisited - Kokiri Forest

July 1998 Final
OoT-Kokiri Forest July98.png OoT-Kokiri Forest July98 Comp.png

Actor Debugger is turned on. A green debug arrow is visible above the stump. The Kokiri Girl NPC had a lighter green headband and there's a lot more bushes placed. House models weren't redesigned yet and the old minimap is shown.

Revisited - Hyrule Field

Prototype Final
OoT-Hyrule Field July98.png OoT-Hyrule Field July98 Comp.png

The rock hiding the grotto is missing, and all the trees have leaves of the same color.

Revisited - Lon Lon Ranch

OoT-Cuccos July 98.jpg OoT-Cuccos 2 July 98.jpg OoT-Lon Lon Ranch 4 Jul98 Comp.png

A tree was added to this location, and more detail was added to the cliff texture.

Racing Ingo

OoT-Race Ingo 3 July 98.jpg

Rather oddly, a timer is counting down during the race rather then up. This might have been a placeholder.

Epona's shadow rendered on top of the path texture. In the final game, they changed it so Link's and Epona's shadow goes invisible to avoid clipping issues.

Cowshed

Prototype Final
OoT-Cowshed July 98.jpg OoT-Cowshed Jul98 Comp.png

The wall textures are noticeably more simple.

Revisited - Hyrule Castle Town

Prototype Final
OoT-Market July98.png OoT-Market July98 Comp.png

There are many little differences to see in this July 1998 screenshot of Hyrule Castle Town.

  • All the NPCs have blue-ish clothes.
  • The haggling townspeople actor didn't exist, and instead there are invidual NPCs placed at the stall.
  • The Twin Jugglers who always laugh in the final game aren't laughing.
  • The NPC who's looking around wasn't there.
  • The tree type was changed and the shadow of the tree wasn't cast on the pre-render.
  • No bushes around the tree.
  • The stone floor in the pre-render was adjusted for the final game.

Revisited - Temple of Time Exterior

Prototype Final
OoT-OutsideToT July98.png OoT-OutsideToT July98 Comp.png

Death Mountain's smoke cloud seen in the May/June '98 pre-render is gone. The angle is quite different to both May/June '98 version of the pre-render and final.

Kakariko Village House

July 1998 Final
OoT-Talon July 98.jpg OoT-Kakariko Jul98 Comp.png

Talon is seen sleeping on the bed as Adult Link and the pre-render is final.

Revisited - Graveyard

Prototype Final
OoT-Kakariko Graveyard July98.png OoT-Kakariko Graveyard July98 Comp.png

Royal Family's Tomb was placed further away from the wall and had no Ocarina playing spot. The lack of the Ocarina playing spot indicates that the grave would've been made once Sun's Song was added, as originally only the warp songs were planned to exist. The fence above the mountain wall still seemed to use the design that ended up only being used in Zora's Fountain.

Dampé's Shack

Prototype Final
OoT-Dampes Shack July 98.png OoT-Graveyard 1 Jul98 Comp.png

The door is also the same as the Forest Temple, heavily indicating that most door designs were derived from it first.

Appears finalized.

Redead Grave

Prototype Final
OoT-Royal Familys Tomb July 98.png OoT-Royal Tomb Jul98 Comp.png

A noticeable triforce symbol is present above the chest, and the torches nearby are different. This triforce symbol ended up being moved to Royal Family's Tomb once it was made.

July Screenshot JP Final (Alternate Setup)
OoT-Serenade Cutscene 2 July 98.jpg OoT-Serenade Cutscene 2 July 98 Comp.png

The first close look at Sheik's earlier character model, notably simpler in geometry and textures. The door behind Sheik is the same one used in Ice Cavern's alternate setup in the final version, identical to the Forest Temple's doors.

The line Sheik says here ("We meet again, Link...") is the same, however it was separated into two lines, presumably to make room for the player's name.

Twinrova's Lair

Prototype Final
OoT-Twinrovas Lair July 98.jpg OoT-Twinrovas Lair Jul98 Comp.png

The floor tiles appear to be a simpler repeating pattern, rather than the 'framed' design of the final.
