This is a sub-page of Prerelease:Team Fortress 2.

This cactus is UNDER CONSTRUCTION
This article is a work in progress.
...Well, all the articles here are, in a way. But this one moreso, and the article may contain incomplete information and editor's notes.
So very stubbly.
This page is rather stubbly and could use some expansion.
Are you a bad enough dude to rescue this article?
Hmmm...
To do:
There's way more that needs to get added.
  • Images and detailed information of player model differences between early trailers.
  • Images and detailed information on ctf_2fort map differences between early trailers, prerelease screenshots and other media shown off before release.
  • Likely more trailers that might have differences.

By around 2005, Valve had settled on a finale design for Team Fortress 2, but many changes were still made before the game would finally release in October of 2007 as one of the featured games in The Orange Box.

2006 Trailers

Trailer 1 Trailer 2

The first Team Fortress 2 trailer was revealed on July 19, 2006 at the EA Summer Showcase event, it was later uploaded to YouTube. This trailer was reuploaded to the teamfortress YouTube channel in 2017.

The second Team Fortress 2 trailer was shown off at the 2006 Games Convention on August 21st, 2006, it was later uploaded to YouTube but taken down.

Differences Between The Trailers And The Game

General

  • The bridge on 2Fort lacks a roof. This can also be seen in the second trailer.
  • The stairs leading to the sewers on 2Fort are shown to be a spiral staircase.
  • The Minigun's muzzleflash is a separate model (minigun_muzzle.mdl). This same muzzleflash was to be used in the Sentry Gun, as seen in Trailer 2.
    • The Minigun's casings are shown to be a 3D model before being changed to 2D sprites.
  • All classes look almost different, except for the Pyro.
  • All death screams heard throughout the trailers are either stock sounds (such as the famous Wilhelm scream) or voiced by developers. These screams were used as placeholders.

Scout

  • Scout uses the Sniper's Submachine Gun (likely a placeholder), changed to the Nailgun in Trailer 2.

Soldier

  • RED Soldier is shown with a pale grayish coat rather than a red one.
  • Soldier's chest grenades are simple black eggs.
  • The Rocket Launcher is shown to be frontloaded just like in Team Fortress Classic.
  • Soldier has a more pronounced five o' clock shadow.
  • Soldier's taunt with the Shovel doesn't feature him yelling, it also appears to be a bit unfinished.

Pyro

  • Pyro's gloves are completely black.
  • The gas canister is completely black with a yellow smaller tank.

Demoman

  • Demoman is seen using the Dynamite Pack/MIRV Grenade, a cut weapon.
  • Demoman is also shown using the Pipebomb Launcher, another cut weapon. It is shown using the model of the Grenade Launcher as a placeholder.

Heavy

  • Heavy is seen wearing a brown vest that's more detailed than his final vest.

Engineer

  • Similar to Soldier, Engineer is shown with grayish sleeves.
  • His right-hand glove is team-coloured.

Medic

  • Medic is shown holding a giant syringe, replaced with his Bonesaw in final.
  • He is seen wearing a stethoscope, something revisited with the community-made cosmetic "Surgeon's Stethoscope".

Sniper

  • Sniper's shirt and pants are darker than his final design.
  • Sniper's scope uses a different charge meter design compared to the final.

Spy

  • Spy is shown with the Tranquilizer Gun, a cut weapon rather than his Revolver in final.
  • Spy by far has the most noticeably different design. The RED Spy has a far more matted color palette, with less red.
  • Spy has a different (possibly specifically-made) animation for readying a backstab in Trailer 2.

Illustrative Rendering in Team Fortress 2

Illustrative Rendering in Team Fortress 2 is a developer video shown off by Valve at the 2007 International Symposium on Non-Photorealistic Animation and Rendering event. While the game was nearing launch when the video was shown, there are some very minor differences present.

  • Different shading is shown.
  • From 0:30 to 0:57 renders of the characters are shown off. They appear to have been later used for the back of the official trading cards.
    • Scout is still shown with the Nailgun.
    • Soldier's Rocket launcher is still shown to be frontloaded.
    • Pyro is shown with a hose connecting their Flamethrower to the gas canister on their back, a detail that was removed from the final.
    • Spy still has his early design from the 2006 trailers.
    • The revolver is shown with a wooden grip rather than being made of ivory. This early design seems to have been revived with its festive variant. A bucket icon for the wooden-grip revolver design was leaked as part of the Source Developer Asset Repository leaks.
  • Spy has a less detailed face, similar to his face in the June 2007 build leaked in 2020. This is supposedly due to light and flex errors.
