This page details pre-release information and/or media for Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins.

Early English Title Screen

As seen in a commercial for the Game Boy, the English title screen once had a much different design, similar to the final Japanese one. However, the title logo is completely different to either final version, and there are a few other differences with the final Japanese version: the early version has a rectangular sign with "Start" posted to it, while the final has an arrow-shaped one with "To Mario Land" instead.

The final also adds the characteristic eyes to the mushroom above the logo, and makes the pipe appear less worn.

  • Sfx are direct ports from Super Mario Bros. 3.

Mushroom House

The first level of the game is completely different, so getting a comparison shot is not possible.

Overworld Map

Prototype Final

  • A cloud is placed in a spot where there is none in final.
  • The path on the left would've gone through the small tunnel, which is a Casino in the finished game and only has one entrance due to that reason. In order to go around the hill rather than through it, the path was moved down, and the land was extended downward to accomodate. The small hills were also changed to rocks.
  • The bottom path ends in a large spot, whereas it's a simple dead end in the final game. This may have been done to accomodate the adjusted left path.

Music Track

Early Final

The Overworld Map's music had a different arrange.

Pumpkin Zone's first level is drastically different from the final release. The old design features tiles that didn't make it, such as the tombstones and an open brick wall. The ground tiles under the bricks are used in the 2nd level of this zone and aren't found in the 1st.

Space Zone

SML2-Unknown Level.png

A barren-looking level with just two rows of coins. Mario's got his space suit on. The HUD appears to be broken, as it's only displaying an icon of the Goomba and not the rest.

Goal

An early "GOAL" level exit featured a mushroom that ended up being removed from the final game. The exit in these screenshots has broken tiles that were fixed in a later build of the game.

Video Games Scan

An issue of the German magazine Video Games showed eight pictures from the new game, most with differences from the final. From top-right to bottom-left:

  • The third, fourth, fifth, and sixth shots use "TIME" in the HUD (still present, but unused, in the final) to denote the level timer. The third shot in particular has some mushrooms that aren't in the final at all.
  • The seventh and eighth shots have the final timer style, but also a World-Level designation (in this case, 1-1), which indicates that the magazine seemingly had access to two early builds.
  • The seventh shot shows the Mushroom House-style Goal, which is also present as an unused element in the final.
Prerelease Final
Overworld Overworld

A very different-looking overworld, including a "mushroom gateway".
