Prerelease:Super Mario 64 (Nintendo 64)/Patent Material
This is a sub-page of Prerelease:Super Mario 64 (Nintendo 64).
Images from Super Mario 64 were included in the patent for the Ultra 64 filed on November 22, 1995.
Starting Area
Mostly identical to the final, with the differences mainly involving the castle's appearance. Notably, the starting area in Super Mario 64 DS seems to be an edited version of this model, featuring a similar castle shape among other similarities.
- A circular object (most likely a clock or a compass rose) is present above the doorway instead of a stained glass window rendition of Peach. The upper-right quarter of the object seems to be a lighter color.
- The brick textures are simpler.
- The windows are not vaguely mushroom-shaped like in the final game.
- A large, flat "cloud" separates the lower half of the castle from the tower.
- The sprites for the trees are missing, but their shadows are in place.
- The bridge is fairly simple: it is made of the same bricks as the castle and curves, and is connected to the main landscape by stone posts instead of guardrails.
- The rusty metal door in the moat is missing.
- There is land behind the castle, which is not present in the final game. The outdoor area containing the entrance to Big Boo's Haunt is likely a remnant of this idea, especially since the door to it is directly opposite of the front entrance.
Earliest Castle Design
A much earlier and very barebones layout for the interior of the castle. The trees in the courtyard use the scrapped tree05_txt texture, or at the very least a texture very similar to it. This layout was also featured in the instruction manual for the final game in color.
Another version.

- The tunnel at the starting area is missing, as is the hole leading to the Red Coin room under the Wiggler fight.
- The platform with the wooden post appears larger.
- The mountaintop features a spike where the entrance to the Wiggler boss normally is in the final game. A similar mountaintop spike once existed in Bob-Omb Battlefield.
Unknown Area
This needs some investigation. Discuss ideas and findings on the talk page. Specifically: Any similarities among the leaked development assets or the areas added for the DS remake? |
A simple dungeon or room which doesn't match anything from the final game. This looks like the Ghost House from the B-Roll october builds.
