Nintendo Dream

An interview with Satoru Iwata was published in the May 2001 issue of Nintendo (Formerly 64) Dream. Generally, the interview focuses on his new position at Nintendo, but at the very end they ask Iwata about MOTHER 3:

Nintendo Dream: I have one last question I'd like to ask you, Iwata-san. I'd like to ask you about MOTHER 3.

Iwata: Go ahead.

Nintendo Dream: Since development for MOTHER 3 on the N64 was canceled, is there any chance we could see it released on the GameCube or GameBoy Advance?

Iwata: I don't know. It's not something we're currently working on. But, I don't know about the future. Because two years ago, I couldn't imagine I'd be interviewed about Nintendo like this. So, I can't possibly imagine what will happen two years from now. But when I think about what we have lined up for the next year, there are many teams running around with their own schedules. MOTHER 3 is not part of that.

Nintendo Dream: Isn't there discussion about turning it into a novel or movie?

Iwata: Since their focus is on games, Nintendo or HALKEN don't have anything to do with it. That will be up to Itoi-san, I suppose.

Nintendo Dream: The only time you spoke about the cancellation was at the roundtable discussion posted on "The Almost Daily" website.

Iwata: The reason we spent so much time talking on that website was because we wanted to put all our feelings into it, and I don't think it would've been a good idea for us to share our thoughts induvidually elsewhere. Of course, I've always felt sorry for the people who were waiting for MOTHER 3...I'll never forget the fact that I failed to achieve what we wanted to do.

Nintendo Dream: However, there are still some fans who don't have access to the internet...

Iwata: It's true the decision to make the announcement there is questionable, but the fact that it is Itoi's site allowed us to go one step further and talk about everything. Besides, I think the reason Itoi-san doesn't talk much about this in other media, is because he feels he said all he wanted to on there. But, I'm sure some Nintendo Dream readers will say I'm a little cold for saying so. [1]

Smashing...Live!

On August 27 at the Tokyo Festival Hall, a Super Smash Bros. Melee orchestra concert was held. It was reported that Benimaru Itoh attended the event, and gave fans hope when he proclaimed MOTHER 3 news would be coming "very soon." [2]
