Earliest Build

Lumines earliest build roundabout.jpg

The earliest known build of Lumines: Puzzle Fusion dates back to this screenshot taken around the time of the Tokyo Game Show 2004 event and featured on the first private game presentation. Screenshot shows earliest known version of Roundabout skin, which is drastically different from retail game:

  • Background photo is much more saturated and dark.
  • It uses Shinin' blocks, but they all different from retail version by having shadow.
  • Audio visualizer color is light-yellow instead of black.
  • Red blurry pulses is shown on background, probably at the end of some animation. That animation never featured since.
  • Overall UI is much more yellow (though it could be poor image quality issue)
  • Beat counter at top of the game field is colored in same color as rest of the UI, while being transparent black in retail game.
  • Piece holder is white color instead of orange like in retail game.
  • A never seen UI element is featured at bottom of the game field. It's similar to audio visualizer, but with just two horisontal bars growing at right and left sides, and correspondingly marked by 'L' and 'R' letters. It's unknown what that UI element should've been doing. Fan fact that graphics for 'L' and 'R' letters with horisontal bars still exists in the retail game inside almost every skin texture file.

Trailer Build

Another earliest known build of Lumines: Puzzle Fusion dates back to this video, released around the time of the Tokyo Game Show 2004 event. Four skins are showcased in the order of SQUARE DANCE, TALK 2 YOU, JAPANESE FORM and Auto Mobile Industry, although there is no audio. In this video, several differences can be spotted:

  • The game's logo is radically different from the final version, being green, slightly 3D, and using a pixel font.
  • An animation featuring pulsating ripples can be seen in some skins' background animations.
  • The skull avatar seen in the bottom left corner is of a slightly brighter color.
  • SQUARE DANCE's appearance was completely different: the skin sported a brown background, with circles appearing from the sides, and occasional pulsing squares. Curiously, the pulsing squares eventually appeared in the skin's animations in Lumines Plus.
  • The generic block design used in SQUARE DANCE and JAPANESE FORM looks slightly different, being slightly similar to SHININ's blocks in the final game.
  • The light block of the skin Auto Mobile Industry was slightly different, being of a more reddish color compared to the orange used in the final release.

TGS 2004 Build

A slightly later build was also showcased in the Tokyo Game Show 2004 event:

  • It seems not only the game's logo was different, the title screen in its entirety was different as well, featuring many blooming flowers, in comparison to the pixelized landscape pictures used in the final game.
  • One of SHININ's music clips, specifically the one used when the game starts, does not appear.

Later Builds

Remember when YT had a little indifferent face when a video went down? TCRF remembers.
This page or section has one or more broken YouTube links.
Please find an archived version of the video(s) or a suitable replacement.

A build from much later in development can be seen in the following video, although its release date is currently unknown. The following skins are showcased, in order: JUST..., 45 degrees, MEGURO and SQUARE DANCE. While most things are the same as the final game, there are still several differences:

  • JUST...'s "dec2" sound is slightly different, lacking a chord hit.
  • 45 degrees uses ROUND ABOUT's visuals.
  • MEGURO's "dec" sounds lack a chord hit. The bonus sound was also different or missing. In case of the former, it was later reused as a background track in the final game.
  • SQUARE DANCE used Fanatic's visuals. The bonus sound was different as well, being much lower-pitched. Curiously, this sound was reused in Lumines Plus.

Lumines later build dadido.png

Another later build was discovered by screenshot featured in Lumines Plus press kit. That screenshot shows pre-release version of Da-Di-Do skin, with major difference is actual PSP image being used on background. In retail build all elements resembling PSP console were removed, leaving only overall shape of the console untouched. Also rainbow effect is missing in this version of the skin.
