Fortnite was announced back in December 2011 by Epic Games, various pre-release videos and images were shown online.

A trailer for the game released back in 2011 that looked very different from the final game. There is a unfinished teaser from the prototype build where the game was originally called "Fortnight". It is also the first game using the Unreal Engine 3 after it's debut.
