Development Timeline

2007

  • August 3 - At Quakecon, John Carmack indicates that Doom 4 is in development

2008

  • May 7 - id officially announces Doom 4.

2009

  • April 10 - Todd Hollenshead states the game is "deep in development".
  • June 23 - ZeniMax Media, parent company of Bethesda Softworks, acquires id Software and their franchises. Publishing rights for id's future games would now go to ZeniMax, including Doom 4.

2012

  • February 28 - An ex-employee posts concept art, to which creative director Matthew Hooper is quick to deny their legitimacy.
  • Late 2012 - id decides to turn the project into a reboot (more a soft-reboot by the final game's release).

2013

  • April 3 - Kotaku publishes an exposé about Doom 4's development, describing it as "deep in development".
  • November 22 - John Carmack leaves id Software for Oculus VR.

2014

  • June 10 - Bethesda re-announces Doom 4 at E3 with a teaser, now simply just Doom. It teases the return of the Cyberdemon and slates a full reveal at Quakecon that year.
  • July 17 - A more expansive trailer is shown off at Quakecon, along with a behind closed doors presentation to reaffirm that the game was not in trouble.

2015

  • June 14 - Another teaser trailer is shown off at E3, showcasing the return of the Double-Barreled Shotgun and the Revenant.

2016

  • May 13 - Doom releases worldwide on Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
