Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time & Darkness/Unused Pokémon
This is a sub-page of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time & Darkness.
Unsurprisingly, there are many placeholder and unused Pokemon hidden in the files of Time and Darkness.
Version-Exclusive Celebi and Mewtwo
Taking a page from the book of their mainline relatives, Time/Darkness have version-exclusive Pokemon that can only naturally spawn in one or the other. Since trading Pokemon isn't possible, the programmers were kind enough to offer a solution for players who want to collect them all: if a received Wonder Mail involves a version-exclusive Pokemon, they will begin appearing in their respective dungeon(s). One can easily obtain such mail by using a Wonder Mail code generator.
That is, unless you want the version-exclusive Mythical/Legendary duo Celebi and Mewtwo, which are exclusive to Time and Darkness respectively. The Wonder Mail system doesn't allow jobs to involve any Mythical/Legendary Pokemon, so a code cannot be generated for them. The Pokemon Company instead opted to release exclusive event Wonder Mail over Nintendo WFC during limited timeslots, which involved the two Pokemon and allowed them to appear. These mails did not have passwords, although they can be transferred to other saves via Local Communication.
As of May 2014, Nintendo WFC is no longer running. Since the jobs had no passwords, there is no way to obtain these Pokemon without cheating or using Local Communication with someone who happens to still have the jobs on their file. GameFAQs has an uploaded save file with these jobs present.
Unused Pokemon
There are a number of slots in the Pokemon ID list that have unused Pokemon data. Many of these appear to be used during the game's cutscenes internally, and many others appear to be placeholder data for Pokemon that would not appear in these games.
For the sake of completeness, several codes will be posted, which allows one to obtain these Pokemon in different ways. All codes are US only.
Chansey's Daycare
Time | Darkness |
94000130 FFFB0000 0229C12C 00000??? 1229C130 00000000 D2000000 00000000 |

This spawns an egg containing the selected Pokemon in the daycare when Select is pressed. The egg will hatch immediately.
Hero Pokemon Modifier
Time | Darkness |
122AD6E8 00000??? |
122AD628 00000??? |
This changes the ID of your Hero to the selected Pokemon. This maintains all of your original Hero's stats, moves, etc.
Partner Pokemon Modifier
Time | Darkness |
122AD750 00000??? |
122AD690 00000??? |
This changes the ID of your Partner to the selected Pokemon. This maintains all of your original Partner's stats, moves, etc.
Hex. Value: 0x000 | Type(s): Normal | Sprites: Totally blank; viewing it in Assembly shows a blank portrait. Adding it to the crossroads will either copy the other Pokemon on your party or show an invisible sprite. In-dungeon it appears as a jumble of sprites that can also affect Hero. |
Name: ?????????? | Category: ?????????? Pokemon
Ability(s): Overgrow | ||
Genders: Genderless | Notes: Has Hero's personality when talked to. EXP gain is erratic, may be based on other Pokemon in the dungeon. Appears to be a placeholder just meant to populate the 000 slot so the real Pokemon can start at ID 1.
If a dungeon is entered while it's "masking" a party member in the Crossroads, the game will crash. Using the Chansey's Daycare code does not work for this Pokemon, since 000 will just be recognized as "no egg"; you can use any multiple of 600 (i.e. 0x258) to spawn this Pokemon in the Daycare instead.

Genders: Male Only | Notes: Uses Hero's Talk Type. This ID is exclusively used for a few story cutscenes, which seems to be the fate of many of the rest of the unused slots. (Seems like an inefficient way to do it, but I'm not a programmer...) Its stats are identical to the real Wigglytuff.

Name: reserve_21
through reserve_45 |
Category: reserve_[xx] Pokemon
Ability(s): Overgrow | ||
Genders: Genderless | Notes: These are 25 placeholder slots. A few things to note: it starts at 21, reserve_1 would've been in the same slot as the first "cutscene-only" ID, and Sky would later overwrite 21-26 with other cutscene-only characters. This indicates that these were probably slots reserved for more cutscene-only characters that were just not needed. They're all identical, so theyve been condensed into one spot here.
Uses Hero's Talk Type. Its category is the same as its name. If a dungeon is entered while it's "masking" a party member in the Crossroads, the game will crash. Interestingly, reserve_22 can be seen in a few areas in the Top Debug Menu in retail versions, most notably when loading the T00P0X debug rooms.

All IDs after 0x257 are repeated copies of the IDs in 0x000 through 0x257, being completely identical besides their ID. This appears to be a failsafe put in by the programmers to ensure that the data beyond the valid IDs are still stable. However, when the hexadecimal becomes negative (after 0x8000), this failsafe seems to break down, leaving the rest of the IDs as glitch Pokemon.
