This page contains notes for the game The Beginner's Guide.

Removed sound files

Sound files and directories referenced in beginnersguide\maps\soundcache\_master.cache which are no longer present. No data is present for these files other than their names and the first 125ms of each of them (which is pretty much useless).

Red denotes directories and files which are present in the sound cache but not in the game's files. Capitalisation may differ from those of the original files and directories, since all sound file paths and names are fully lowercase in _master.cache.

Orange denotes directories and files which would otherwise be red, but which can be found in the files of The Stanley Parable, and so can probably generally be ignored.

Blue denotes directories and files which are present in the game's files but not in the sound cache (excluding non-sound files and directories which do not contain sounds).

Removed narration files

These removed files, referenced in 'beginnersguide\scenes\narrator\' and 'beginnersguide\scripts\npc_sounds_narration.txt', appear to consist of earlier runs of the game's narration. The VOF files (final recordings) are almost identical to the file listings in the final game (with a few small exceptions: "VOF_intro (old).wav" and "VOF_tower17 (stinger).wav", which are located in the game's files, are not present here), and hence the VOF files have been omitted from this list.

The directories are arranged here roughly in the order that they were created in, and the files are ordered by chapter order rather than in alphabetical order, with Interview and Rotation placed at the end, since their planned placement is unknown. Mom was replaced by Puzzle, and Soundmap was located between Backwards and Entering, as evidenced by the earliest of Ryan Roth's notes included with the game's soundtrack. The folder named alt is included here multiple times, and the second set of files in the folder are, alongside the whisper folder, categorised as "Davey's manual Act 1 sound files".

Games shown in trailer

The game's trailer shows Davey opening a folder containing .exe files, which are ostensibly Coda's games. Some of the games in the folder match up with chapters in the final game, whilst most don't. This is a list of all of the ones seen in the trailer. It should be noted that the dates of the games appear to just be random dates in the range of 2008 to 2011, with no internal or external consistency. The file sizes also appear to be falsified. Also, though the folder is shown to have 134 files in it, the last 25 aren't shown in the trailer (which would probably include 'whisper', 'stairs', 'theater', and 'tower', and possibly also 'workshop').

Narrator object locations

Opening the map files in beginnersguide\maps in a text editor and searching for "down/book.mdl" (or "narrator") allows one to find the exact coordinates of the narrator object in each map. Here's a list of them:

VMF I/O CSV delimiters

The VMF files in beginnersguide\mapsrc have had their CSV delimeters changed from commas (U+002C) to ESC characters (U+001B), which may crash the Hammer editor when trying to open them if they are not changed back beforehand.

LUA scripts

17 LUA scripts can be found packed with The Beginner's Guide, which seem to have been used for developing the game. Notably, its menu layout, the credits, and texture properties for the abandoned loading screens.
