Nintendogs/Unused Text

This is a sub-page of Nintendogs.

This cactus is UNDER CONSTRUCTION
This article is a work in progress.
...Well, all the articles here are, in a way. But this one moreso, and the article may contain incomplete information and editor's notes.
Cacti speak Japanese.
...But what does it mean?
This game has text or audio that needs to be translated. If you are fluent with this language, please read our translation guidelines and then submit a translation!

WARNING: Language tag not added.

Hmmm...
To do:
Some things still need to be covered.
  • Translate all the Japanese text.
  • Check whether the text listed at the end is unused or not.

Quite a handful of unused text exists within the Nintendogs games, revealing various scrapped breeds, items, and functions. Some text is only found in the Japanese versions, whereas some text is only found in international releases. It's a bit hectic...

Breeds

Unfinished text for the removed papillon and maltese breeds can be found across all relevant text files. The golden retriever was left unfinished in the Japanese games, so its strings are not used in those games. The strings for papillon and maltese were left untranslated in international versions, however, the Spanish and French localizations left the strings blank.

Kennel Text

shop.bmg contains the text used in various shops, including the dog kennel. The number strings would have been replaced with proper descriptions of the respective breeds.

Breed Names

For NPC conversations and some system text, the game picks the breed names from stat.bmg. There's a short name and a full name for all breeds, though these names may be the same for some breeds.

Items

item.bmg reveals several scrapped item concepts that were removed for unknown reasons. Some item texts are only found in Japanese versions, some are only found in international versions. There are three texts for every item, the name, the shop/walk description, and the inventory description. The two descriptions are often the same.

Japanese-only

The Japanese Nintendogs games contain text for several removed items, including many records. The text for these was left blank in all other releases. Some leftover data for these can be found in the files, though. The IDs were taken from the Japanese versions.

Unseen Descriptions

A few items cannot be found on walks or sold in shops. Nevertheless, these items have hidden text that cannot be encountered during normal gameplay.

Menus

The game features several menu screens, so it's not a surprise to find some unused menu texts scattered around. Most of the game's system and menu text is stored in main.bmg, except where noted.

It may have been intended to show this on the top screen when the player is in the menu where the player can select Walk, Bark Mode, etc.

Walks

There's plenty of unused text intended to be used when walking your dog. They have been removed in the French and Spanish translations. All of these are found in walking.bmg, except where noted.

Returning Home

When the player returns home, the game gives various hints and clues about the dog's wellbeing. However, the following text is never used.

Shops

Some unused text for various shops can be found in shop.bmg.

This would have informed the player about newly-unlocked breeds when visiting the kennel. In the final game, the player gets informed about this while at home. Aside from this, breeds can be unlocked through Bark Mode and special items as well.

Bark Mode

The following texts suggest that Bark Mode would have worked a bit differently when failing to connect to another player.

Connection Timeout

This text was intended to be used as a timeout message when the player could not connect to another player using Bark Mode. In the final game, the game keeps looking for a connection indefinitely. This line can be found in net.bmg.

Trick Teaching

When attempting to teach a new trick even though no more tricks can be taught, the game prevents the player from using the audio and text input. Furthermore, it also seemed to be possible to cancel naming the trick whereas the player is forced to enter a name in the final game.

Miscellaneous

ジョイスポット

The names for the NPC dogs encountered during walks are found in a separate BMG text file, rendering the dummy name inside the dog attribute files unused. The text actually translates to Joy Spot, referring to a Nintendo service established during the GBA lifetime. Joy Spots refer to special locations in shops and public places where players could connect wirelessly and receive official events. Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen were the first games to be supported.

ダミー

The Japanese word for Dummy can be found in some text files, including npcdog.bmg and video.bmg.

--

This stubby text occupies ID 75 of main.bmg. There's not much to say about this...

Duplicates

Some texts are shared across files, for example the Yes and No options. Not all shared texts are used though, which renders some duplicates unused. Interestingly, the text input characters string duplicate in etc.bmg was removed in the French translation. Also, the file default.bmg contains the text shared by all competitions, however, the file is never loaded.

To Be Checked

The following texts are speculated to be unused, but this still needs to be verified...

; Part of bark mode text. Afaik, the player is never forced to leave. Also, Bark Mode stops wireless connection after encountering another player.
main 83
<DOG> seems to have

went home, too.

; Text to be used when the game boots, but how can this be triggered?

; I think the game either starts a new save file or tells the player the save is corrupted.
etc 20
Data could not be loaded.

; More bark mode stuff, apparently.
