Mother 1+2 is a port of Mother and Mother 2 to the Game Boy Advance. While 2 got a few bug fixes (as well as inferior audio, which is inevitable with any SNES-to-GBA port), 1 had a whole slew of improvements, many of which came from its then-unreleased English version.

To do: Since the two games seem to be near-direct ports of their console counterparts, some of their other unused content could be lurking around as well. There's other unused jingles. Document the debug menu.

Mother 2 Debug Mode

Please elaborate. Having more detail is always a good thing. Specifically: What do the options do?

The easiest way to access the debug menu is by changing the data at ROM offset 0x1F0-0x1F3 from A5 37 01 08 to 55 7A 00 08. Doing this will auto-boot the game to the debug menu. Press Up/Down to select an option, A to go into that option, and B to go back to the previous option. Here's a list of the menu options translated:

Map Select 1, as follows:

• オネット - Onett
• ツーソン - Twoson
• DG谷 - DG Valley, referring to Grateful Dead Valley (Peaceful Rest Valley in English versions)
• ハッピー - Happy, referring to Happy Happy Village
• スリーク - Threek (Threed in English versions)
• ウィンターズ - Winters
• グレープ - Grape, referring to Grapefruit Falls
• サターンバレー - Saturn Valley

MAPセレクト２

Map Select 2, as follows:

• ドコドコ砂漠 - Dusty Dunes Desert

OBJ CHK

This option was used to check character sprites. Selecting this spawns Ness in his house at night, No objects and NPCs are present. Pressing Select will change the character sprite. The game checks for these characters to be loaded:

Pressing R will show an animation for the chosen character. Pressing L will show the previous animation shown.
