Minecraft: Java Edition/Removed Content
This is a sub-page of Minecraft: Java Edition.
To do: This page is certainly out-of-date. Things are being removed with every update and not everything removed in the old days is even shown here. |
This sub-page is dedicated to the removed content in Minecraft.

Removed Human Mob
To do: Get more information about this mob. |
The mob was first added in rd-132328 and it used both the skin and model from another game Notch was developing around the same time as Minecraft, named Zombie Town. In later versions of the game (namely, rd-160052) you were able to spawn a Human by pressing G, however this function was removed in 0.24_SURVIVAL_TEST. At first, they were relatively harmless, as all they did was jump around while flailing their arms. The animations were inconsistent, however. If your game is running at a high framerate (50-60 FPS), you can see the mob's movement animation start to stutter every once in a while.
The mob was later put back in after the Dock MD3 mobs were taken out, in 0.31 of February 1st, 2010-1 and now drop either string, feathers, or gunpowder. They are also meant to drop flint and steel, however this wasn't working until 0.31 of February 1st, 2010-3, in which you cannot destroy stone and ores with bare hands. They also drown in water despite appearing to be swimming like the player. However, they were replaced by the signature pig, sheep (without wool), zombie, creeper, skeleton, and spider models in 0.31 of February 3rd, 2010.
In 0.24_SURVIVAL_TEST, the texture for this mob had its goatee removed. In Beta 1.2, the Mob savegame id was removed. In versions prior to Beta 1.6.6, Monster's AI was fully intact and was hostile towards the player (only accessible using map editors, though). After Beta 1.6.6, this mob was slowly being removed update by update and 1.11 completely removed the mob's leftovers from the game. Prior to 1.11, the leftover AI could have been used to create a mob similar to the Human using mods.
Locked Chest Easter Egg
Beta 1.4 | 13w18a |
---|---|
Version | Comment |
---|---|
Beta 1.4 | This introduced "Steve Co. Supply Crates" that would be created in newly-generated chunks. It was a silly little April Fools' Day prank and a silly little Team Fortress 2 reference! |
Beta 1.4_01 | At the time, the chests were indestructible. After this update, the locked chest block was able to be destroyed in one hit, and if left untouched would decay over time similarly to leaf blocks. Additionally, it generated light equivalent to a Glowstone block. |
Beta 1.8 | Unsurprisingly, when the storage chests were updated to use smaller, animated models in Beta 1.8, the locked chests were not changed. |
12w21a | Their textures were reverted to the blank purple texture. |
12w22a | Replaced with the Block of Emerald texture. |
13w01a | Replaced again with the Block of Redstone texture. |
13w03a | Replaced once again with a texture that reads "missing texture". |
13w18a | Finally to a purple and black texture that parodies the texture used in games based on the Source engine (such as Team Fortress 2) when a texture is missing. |
13w37a | The command to summon was changed to "/setblock ~ ~ ~ minecraft:chest_locked_aprilfools_super_old_legacy_we_should_not_even_have_this". |
13w41a | Locked chests were completely removed and its data value used for 16 colors of stained glass instead. |
Removed Potions
These potions all existed in-game, but could not be brewed or obtained legitimately. All of them acted like base potions in that their appearance was a bottle of water and they had no effect when drunk. They would have been obtained by modifying a potion's damage value with an inventory editor, or with the /give command on servers. These were all removed in 15w31a.
Damage value | Name | Damage value | Name |
---|---|---|---|
6, 7 | Clear Potion | 11 | Diffuse Potion |
13 | Artless Potion | 14, 15 | Thin Potion |
22, 23 | Bungling Potion | 27 | Smooth Potion |
29 | Suave Potion | 30, 31 | Debonair Potion |
38, 39 | Charming Potion | 43 | Refined Potion |
45 | Cordial Potion | 46, 47 | Sparkling Potion |
48 | Potent Potion | 54, 55 | Rank Potion |
59 | Acrid Potion | 61 | Gross Potion |
62, 63 | Stinky Potion |

Sounds
File Name | Sound | Notes |
---|---|---|
old_explode.ogg | The pre-1.0.0 explosion sound. There are two versions of this file. This was removed completely in 1.6. | |
drr.ogg | DRR...DRR...DRR... Actually, it's the old arrow hit sound. Also removed in 1.6. | |
hurt.ogg | Another leftover from an older version! This time it's the hurt sound. Once again, this was removed in 1.6. | |
breath.ogg | Weird, mechanical-sounding breathing. It's quite horrifying. Note that the Blaze enemy uses a different sounding breathing noise. This was the last unused sound removed in 1.6. | |
calm4.ogg | A song made by Notch, officially titled Magnetic Circuit. It would play randomly during the game. It was used to test the music system and was spotted numerous times throughout the game's lifespan, although it was never heard in-game.

SOPA means LOSER in Swedish! | SOPA was an infamous bill being put through the United States House of Representatives in 2012 that aimed to target internet piracy. It was heavily criticized for its ability to be used to censor websites and content on the Internet. In Swedish, "sopa" means "to sweep". It is also used as a derogatory slang word, comparing someone to the dirt that is swept up. This splash text was removed because the SOPA bill ultimately failed to pass. | 1.9 (15w42a) |
Better than Prey! | Prey was a 2006 first-person shooter. This splash was removed shortly after the release of Prey (the 2017 game), potentially to avoid confusion. | 1.12.1 (17w31a) |
Hobo humping slobo babe! | Probably removed in an effort to make the game more child-friendly. | 1.14 (19w12a) |
Made by Notch! | Removed due to Notch no longer contributing to the game, as well as for things best left off this wiki. | 1.14 (19w13a) |
The Work of Notch! | Same reason as the previous splash text. | 1.14 (19w13a) |
110813! | The date Notch married ez (13 August 2011). Likely removed due to their divorce in 2012 and Mojang's distancing from Notch as previously noted. | 1.14 (19w13a) |
Woo, minecraftforum! | Removed due to Minecraft Forum nearly becoming read-only on June 16, 2019. | 1.14.2 (1.14.2-pre4 reupload) |
Undocumented! | Uncertain why this was removed, despite the name it is defiantly documented. | 1.16 (1.16-rc1) |

Anti-Piracy Measure
In older versions of Minecraft since Beta 1.6, this message shows up after a while of playing if Mojang's authentication servers return a 400 response code when verifying the session ID, which occurs when the session ID that the launcher passed to the game itself is either invalid, or doesn't match whatever Mojang's server has, which can occur if the session ID is regenerated as a result of logging in from another location, or the player playing using pirated launcher, which obviously doesn't authenticate with Mojang, making the ID not exist in the first place. This error doesn't appear if the game can't connect to the authentication servers at all, as the game only checks for a 400 response code, which it won't get if the computer it's being played on is offline, and now, since the authentication servers themselves, at least at the address the game checks at, are offline themselves, the message no longer appears on any copy, as the game just assumes it's offline.

This watermark seems to have been removed in version Beta 1.8.
Expanding Ghasts
To do: Has this ever existed in other (Bedrock/Console) editions of the game? |
When Ghasts were first added to the game in Alpha 1.2.0, they would visibly expand before shooting a fireball, along with opening their mouth and eyes as they do currently. However, the aggression timer used for this behavior was not networked properly, causing the effect to not work in multiplayer. The client/server split in version 1.3 also broke this functionality in singleplayer, and the code was removed entirely in snapshot 14w06a for 1.8.
