Marvelous: Mou Hitotsu no Takarajima is an adventure RPG in which the player switches between three protagonists to explore a verdant island and unlock the secrets of Captain Maverick's hidden treasure.

A fan translation was released in 2016.

Debug Mode

Changing 0xAA to 0x00 at ROM offset 0x2F8000 (mapped at address $9F8000) (Game Genie code DD6D-407A) enables Debug Mode.

This enables the following:

  • At any time, on Controller 2, pressing L will freeze the game, and pressing R will make the game advance a frame.
  • During main gameplay, pressing X on Controller 1 will no longer bring up the Item screen, but instead make the character's walk faster and goes through walls. This also works on water to swim through walls.
  • You can press Start on Controller 1 to skip the first cutscene with the monkeys.
  • You can press A on Controller 2 to skip a section of the credits.
  • Using Left or Right on Controller 1 will select the chapter, oddly enough it can select up to Chapter 8, despite the game only having 5 chapters. Chapters 6, 7 and 8 are garbled text, loaded from VRAM. Attempting to select chapters on the second and third save files is buggy and may corrupt the save file.
  • If the first save file is unpopulated, it will be replaced with a debug save file with ま〜べらす (Marvelous) Team name.
    • This save file also comes with a bunch of items and 2000 Luck Rocks to help with game progression at any time if you select a later chapter first.
    • Oddly enough, this includes the unused alternate cell key mentioned later in the page.

Alternate Cell Key

In Chapter 3, Max accidentally swallows a key. After retrieving the key with a magnet, the player acquires an item called "ロウヤのカギ" (Cell Key). However, the game also contains a seemingly-unused item known as "すっぱいロウヤのカギ" (Sour Cell Key). It may have been intended to open the jail cell that appears in Chapter 4. However, in the final game, the door to the cell can be shut by stepping on a switch.

The order in which the items are listed in the game data doesn't synchronize very well with the game's story, so it's not very useful when it comes to making inferences.

This item is included by default in the debug save file.

Alternate Tomato

There's also an alternate "トマト" (Tomato) item with a different graphic. In the final game, the Tomato is a healing item that can fall, float, and sprout, but it can't be picked up and put into the inventory for later use. This alternate tomato, however, can be accessed through the inventory and set to B. Using it appears to have no effect, however.
