Kingdom of Loathing is a browser-based multiplayer role playing game. It's mostly known for its stick figure graphics, rich humor, and numerous pop culture references.
Almost all of KoL's unused images, as well as its unused item, skill, and effect descriptions, can be viewed in-game via URL manipulation, which is how most of the information on this page was gathered.

Unused Items
Item Name | In-game Description | Notes |
---|---|---|
|
This is a birthday candle, which will provide a very small amount of light for a very short amount of time. | A usable item that was used to test the effects system. When used, gives an effect called "Light!" that similarily goes unused; it has no effect on the player. |
|
This doll reminds you of a babe. What babe? The babe with the power. What power? Look, I'm getting sick of all these questions, okay? I'm not the one on trial here! | An off-hand item that increases Mysticality by 1. |
|
This backpack is perfect for beginning adventurers, in that it allows them to carry stuff that they wouldn't otherwise be able to carry. | A back item that increases item drops from monsters by 1%. It's one of the few remnants of the scrapped Container item sub-slot that once was to be implemented into the game. Before becoming a back item in 2006, it increased Carrying Capacity by 100. |
|
This is a backpack made out of hemp, which was probably woven together by some filthy hippy. It's ugly, it smells awful, and the straps chafe your shoulders, but it's roomy. I guess they need lots of space for all of their drug paraphernalia and hacky sacks. | A back item that increases drops from monsters by 2%. It's another remnant of the scrapped Container sub-slot. Before becoming a back item in 2006, it increased Carrying Capacity by 300. |
|
This is the very first container-type item found in the Kingdom of Loathing. How lucky you are to have this! | A back item that increases drops from monsters by 3%. Again, it's one of the few remnants of the scrapped Container sub-slot. Before becoming a back item in 2006, it increased Carrying Capacity by a whopping 1000. |
|
This item is not yet implemented. | Familiar equipment for the mosquito that increases weight by 20lb. Seeing as how the mosquito is the first familiar a player obtains, it was probably meant for testing. Though it still exists in the game through hacked player's inventories, its proper description was deleted. |
|
This is not here yet. | A food item of the lowest quality. Adds 0 adventures and 0 fullness, and doesn't have a unique use message. Might have been intended to drop from the Evil Golden Arches item. |
|
It's Mr. Shirt! Hooray, Mr. Shirt! | A shirt item that increases Muscle, Mysticality, and Moxie by 1. Used for testing. |
|
This is a balloon designed to be held in the hand your weapon doesn't occupy. | An off-hand item that increases Muscle, Mysticality, and Moxie by 1. Used for testing. |
|
This is a fist-sized chunk of pure evil, stolen from the Hermit's secret underground laboratory. | An off-hand item that increases Hot damage, Sleaze damage, and Spooky damage all by +6. |
|
This is a phat beet. You might even go so far as to call it a mad beet. It has been called the most intense of vegetables, so you might even say that in an intensity contest, a beet cannot be beaten. Or beeten. | An item that was a rare drop from resting at your campsite, before being removed around 2005. Is not usable or equippable; in other words, entirely useless. |
|
This is an application to one of the Professional Guilds of Loathing. You should take it to the Council in the Seaside Town. | Item that has no use. Maybe once used as a different way to enter the Guild Hall? |
Unused Skill
There exists an unused Grey You skill called Unused Combat Selfbuff. Its skill number is 27046, meaning it's in the middle of all the other Grey You skills, which are numbered 27000-27062. Its icon is the otherwise-unused goocon46.gif, its cost is listed as 40 MP, and it has no description. Despite its name, which implies it would be used in combat, it's classified as a noncombat skill. It's currently unknown what, if anything, the skill does when used, because it cannot be obtained by any means.
Unused Graphics
A graphic of a duck, appropriately named "duck.gif", has existed in the game's image directory since at least the 24th of April, 2009. It is identical to the item graphic used for the duck-on-a-string and the vampire duck-on-a-string, but it lacks the wheels.

Changed Graphics
Though old files are typically overwritten or deleted when their images are redrawn, there are several cases where the old image remains in the database, leaving it completely unused.
Knob Goblin King
Old | New |
---|---|
The Knob Goblin King was redrawn in a different style, removing his neck in the process.
Demoninja
Old | New |
---|---|
Interestingly, the filename for the old Demoninja image is Demonninja. The new filename is spelled correctly.
The Valley of Rof L'm Fao
Old | New |
---|---|
According to Mr Skullhead, co-creator of Kingdom of Loathing: Jick maintains that the Valley is not, in fact, intended to resemble a part of the female anatomy. Originally, when you used the bridge, you got a new picture that looked even more like female anatomy, complete with mountains that looked like knees up in the air and a well-placed tree at the cleft where they met. However, Jick got tired of people snickering and took the picture out.
Dyspepsi-Cola
Old | New |
---|---|
The Dyspepsi-Cola's item graphic was changed to be darker, and include a graphic on it that is totally not the Pepsi logo.
Cheshire Bat
Old | New |
---|---|
The Cheshire Bat familiar's icon was changed to be the same icon as its hatchling.
Profile Picture
Old | New |
---|---|
While on a player's profile, the old version of this graphic indicated that the player had a picture on the "KoL Player Pics Page". However, not many people realized that it was actually a link; therefore, it was changed to a small picture frame, and now has the text This player has a picture on the KoL Player Pics Page accompanied next to it.

The Black and Brown Pixel were given unique item graphics. The same goes for the Blue, Red, and Green Pixels.
