Finally... the new human evolution has begun. — The game's attract quote.
The House of the Dead returns with alternate weapons, even larger hordes of creatures, and Unreal Engine 4 graphics, and there's a slot machine based on this too. Currently the only game in the mainline series that lacks an official home port. This game chronologically took place before the events of The House of the Dead III.

Unused Sounds Lots of unused sounds ranging from unused Ryan and Kate lines to some leftover early Ryan Taylor voice and from a 2008 Rambo arcade game. |
Unused Graphics
Japanese Version Leftovers
To do: Rip the Master Mode graphics. |
Scarlet Dawn's Japanese version has exclusive features like a player level-up system, purchasable weapons, an achievement system, and support of the Aime amusement card. The International version lacks these features, but the textures remain in the data.
Aime
Textures from the Japanese version's Aime amusement card functionality.
E-money
To do: Do these e-money textures used in the Japanese version? |
Lots of leftover assets from the Japanese version's e-money support.
HODCoin
Textures for the HODCoin, which is the currency used in the Japanese version. Players bought weapons with HODCoins, which they earned from repeat playthroughs, killing enemies, and collecting items. The International version lacks a currency system; all of the weapons -- save for the "Machine Gun+", "Shotgun+", and "Extra Life", which were removed -- are available for free.
Mission
The Japanese version offered missions that the player could complete in repeat playthroughs.
Net
Network icons from the Japanese version's e-money and Internet connectivity features, which overseas versions lack.
Trophy
Leftovers from the Japanese version's trophy system.
Game Editor
A leftover splash screen of some sort of a Game Editor from the game's development.
Unused Models
The High Priestess Temporary Model
An unused temporary model for The High Priestess, a boss character in the Laboratory level, which was originally portrayed as a small squid instead of a giant squid in the final version.
Background Creatures
A naked and skinny figure of the creatures. Most likely used in "Scarecrow Manor" level (Chapter 0) in the background. Judging by the look of the creatures, these creatures don't seem to match any of the creatures featured in the final game.
Unused Gore
Several of the gore models for the creatures upon dying were stored in the game's files. In the final game, the creatures dissolved into thin air (immediately disappeared in Mainland China version) upon dying. These were scrapped due to Japan's current arcade law to not allow gore in any arcade games which oddly applies to the International version as well.
Regional Differences
To do: Mainland China version differences such as Murrer spawns changed to Ratstars and edited cutscene of the ending of The Chariot boss fight. |
The Japanese version features most of the online content that went unused in the International version (see above) and the game can be played through Aime card. The Japanese version features two modes: Normal Mode and Master Mode. Master Mode is the very hard mode where the players can fight through many hordes of creatures to survive and does not provide specific weapons during each of the Chapters (with the exception of boss fights). This is the only mode where the players can earn the best ending (Kate and Ryan) if the players completed Master Mode without using continues. The International version removed these and replaced with a completely different mode select screen that offers players to start from the beginning (Chapter 0) or go through the later three selectable Chapters. The criteria for getting the best ending was changed due to the lack of Master Mode. The difficulty in the version is a mix of both Normal and Master Mode's difficulty. However, the International version's audit still mentions "Master Mode" and only Normal Mode was counted for every playthroughs despite the change of the game's difficulty.
Machine Gun EX was called "Machine Gun Double" in the Japanese version. However, Machine Gun+, Extra Life, and Shotgun+, a weapon exclusively in that Japanese version remains unused in the International version's files and can be seen on the version's weapon files.
Oddities
The English localization is incomplete, with most of the subtitles for gameplay and cutscenes left blank in the game code. The only English subtitles present are for The Moon and The Hangedman's dialogue, AI voices (unmanned helicopter in "Scarecrow Manor" chapter and laboratory security system in "Laboratory" level), level complete screens, and the "final result" screen at the end of the game. However, it is possible to bring the subtitles back by modding the subtitle file from a different language files (Spanish language for example).
Internal Project Name
According to directory naming, the game's project name is Hodzero. "HOD" is the abbreviation used in Japan for House of the Dead, so the full project name is likely "House of the Dead Zero".
