This is a sub-page of Gran Turismo 2.

This page documents content that was either intended for use in Arcade Mode or found exclusively on its disc.

Unused Graphics

Professional Level Panel

Unused Used
GT2-Professional Level.png GT2-FinalArcadeProfessional.png

This panel is found within the various arc_panels texture sheet files in the arcade directory of GT2.VOL. It features a different design compared to other difficulty option graphics and is also found intact (and unused) in early demo versions of the game, suggesting it was dropped not too late into development. It is unclear whether this is an early version of the "Hard" difficulty panel – which also carries the word "Professional" on it in English language sheets – or if it was intended for a cut fourth difficulty level.

A professional difficulty level would later appear in Gran Turismo 3 with a button combination to access it in Arcade Mode.

Early Game Mode Panels

arc_panels.tim in all versions of the game contains an early texture sheet, dated about a month before the one used in the initial Japanese release. It features a different design for the game mode selection graphics – akin to that seen in early demo builds, notably containing panels for the scrapped "Drag Race" mode and an "Option" menu (the former being a carryover from the demos, where it also is unused).

Early Car Class Panels

Among the various Arcade Mode panels, the car class buttons saw the most revisions during development, with one of these changes introducing a typo where "Sports" is misspelled as "Sprots." This mistake was caught before the game went gold, but the early graphics survive in arc_panels.tim.

Bonus Cars Sign

GT2-Bonus Cars.png

Found within the various regional arc_goodies files is this text bubble graphic. It may have been part of an earlier design of the Goodies/Bonus Items screen, which keeps track of the mode's various unlockable cars.

Manufacturer Logos

A number of manufacturer logos, meant to be shown above the car's logo in Arcade Mode, exist in arc_maker.tim but are never used or seen.

GT2-Arcade-Mercury-Logo.png

Mercury was originally planned to have its own dealer, but its only models – the '67 classic and the then-new '99 Mercury Cougar – ended up moved to the Ford dealer during development. This logo can be seen in demo builds, but is never used in the retail versions of GT2. Mercury was first treated as a separate brand in Gran Turismo 4.

GT2-Arcade-Rover-Logo.png

The various models of the Mini Cooper were originally meant to be found under the Rover manufacturer, but that was ultimately changed to a generic "MINI and MG" dealer. Like Mercury, the Rover logo is used in the earliest demo build available, but never sees any use in neither the later demos nor the final game. However, the game still accounts for the Rover manufacturer credit, as the Mini Cooper 1.3i appears between Peugeot 206 GTi and Suzuki Alto Works RS/Z '98 in Class C Arcade Mode car selection.

GT2-Arcade-Vauxhall-Logo.png

While the Opel Tigra is used in Arcade Mode – in both road and race flavors, the Vauxhall variant is not available at all, even in PAL version set to English, rendering this logo unused. The logo does not exist either in any demo builds.

Early GT Mode Dataset

Present in the carparam VOL directory on the Japanese Arcade Mode disc are earlier versions of files that handle garage text strings, car parts and race parameters, built about four and a half hours before those found and used on the GT Mode disc.

jpn_unistrdb.dat

This file stores the individual strings that make up a car's name as seen in GT Mode's garage. The changes here involve fixing a mistake with the Unisia JECS Skyline – which is incorrectly referred to as "Unisia JACS" – as well as cleaning up strings related to some Subaru Impreza models.

gtmode_data.dat

This file handles various data related to all cars in the game, including which strings – referencing the text found in jpn_unistrdb.dat – are used to compose a car's name. The changes made to gtmode_data.dat are all related to the aforementioned Subarus, but the table that follows includes cars affected by modifications to both files.

gtmode_race.dat

This file controls the various parameters related to GT Mode race events. The differences here reveal that, at a rather late point in development, various credit prizes and power restrictions were bumped, presumably for the player's convenience.
