Flipnote Studio was a free downloadable DSi application that allowed users to create their own flipbook styled animations using the DSi's touch screen.

While it pales compared to even other contemporary animation software available at the time, and a limit of options such as colors, layers, sound, and an infamously annoying size limit that ambitious animators had to deal with, it still managed to become a well received and popular application for the DSi due to its simplicity and creative use of the DSi's hardware. It even got a sequel on the 3DS, Flipnote Studio 3D.

"Flipnote Hatena", an online service hosted on Hatena itself, allowed users to share their flipnotes as well as view, download, and rate others' through the internet. It was ultimately shut down on May 31st, 2013 but fan servers like "Sudomemo" are still around today.

Regional Differences

• The Nintendo DSi Library is accessed through the Flipnote Gallery: World in the Japanese version. Since Flipnote Gallery: World only exists in the Japanese version, it's instead accessed through the main menu of Flipnote Studio in the international versions.
• In the Japanese version, a message will appear on the beginning of each day when you use the camera function, reminding you that you can't post Flipnotes that make use of the camera in Flipnote Gallery: World. This prompt doesn't appear in the international versions.
• The Nintendo DSi Library's top screen uses the Flipnote Gallery: World UI design in the Japanese version. In the international versions, it just uses a simple static image.
