Dragon's Fury is a port of the classic TurboGrafx-16 pinball game Devil's Crush.

Predefined Passwords

Technosoft added a bunch of predefined 1-player passwords:

Password Description
OMAKEBGM00 Change main table music to "Knights of Legend," the Stage 1 theme from Thunder Force II.
OMAKEBGM01 Change main table music to "A Breach of Contract" from Herzog Zwei.
OMAKEBGM02 Change main table music to "Venus Fire," the Planet Gorgon theme from Thunder Force III.
OMAKEBGM03 Change main table music to "Blood-Stained Lake" from Elemental Master.
OMAKEBGM04 Change main table music to "Etude of Wind" from Shin Kyuugyokuden.
BGMOFFMODE Turns background music off.
TECHNOSOFT Starts a new game with 10 balls and 2,000,000 points.
TIMETRIAL0 A secret Time Trial mode. (see below)
TIMETRIAL1 TIMETRIAL0 + BGMOFFMODE

Restarting from a password after using one of these passwords reverses the effect of the first password.

Hmmm...
To do:
Find out if Dragon's Fury has its own passwords.

Time Trial Mode

By using the passwords TIMETRIAL0 or TIMETRIAL1 as mentioned above, the game will start a secret Time Trial mode. In this mode, players start with 99 Balls, with which to get as high a score as possible in the main table. Access to Bonus Stages appears to be disabled in this mode - any routes that would lead to them only score extra points and immediately return the ball. Many other bonuses are also disabled; for example you cannot earn extra balls by hitting a flying enemy while launching the ball. It is also not possible to pause the game; the button does not offer any function in this mode (which also prevents passwords from being viewed mid-game).

Although there is no visual cue to explain this, Time Trial mode is limited to 3 minutes of play. After three minutes, any left over bonus is credited; and the game then ends immediately. The player is then taken to a Results Screen, with the final score for the run and an instruction to "Press Reset". This screen uses similar graphics to the "Best 5" Highscore table, although the scores earned here do not contribute to the Highscores and no references are made to the current highscores (likely as the need to reset would wipe the score table anyway). Interestingly, this screen in Dragon's Fury refers to the mode as "Devil Shock Time Trial Mode". Devil Shock was the title of the cancelled arcade port that had been announced at the Amusement Machine Show of 1991, on the week prior to the Japanese release.

PCM Test

While the Music and Sound Tests are active from the start, a PCM Test can be unlocked, though the conditions to do so are currently unknown. For simplicity's sake, use the patch code FFF5DC:FFFF (any nonzero value will do) before entering the options screen. PCM Test should be tucked at the bottom of the screen. There are only 3 samples, so go crazy...

Hmmm...
To do:
See if there is a button combination or something that unlocks them.

Regional Differences

Title Screen

Devil Crash MD (Japan) Dragon's Fury (International)
DevilCrashMD Title Screen.png DragonsFury MDTitleScreen.png

The game was simply released as Devil Crash MD in Japan, obviously showing the fact that it's a port of the original PC Engine game. For whatever reason, when releasing the game internationally, Tengen chose to change the title completely to Dragon's Fury, rather than just the simple adjustment from Devil Crash to Devil's Crush that Hudson Soft did for the TurboGrafx-16 game.

Pentagrams/Hexagrams

Like the TurboGrafx-16 version, changes were made to remove Satanic imagery from the game's international release, though these changes were somewhat different:

Devil Crash MD (Japan) Dragon's Fury (International)
Satanic! Yeah, much less offensive. Thanks.

The pentagram and hexagrams at the top of the table have been changed into regular five-pointed stars. This is different from the censorship of the original TurboGrafx-16 version, which changed the pentagram to an eight-pointed star in the same style.

Hmmm...
To do:
Document other differences.
  • The stone background tiles look like they are different in the above screenshots.
  • The title screen's pentagrams have been replaced with a different symbol entirely.
  • Bonus stage 2's coffins (with a cross) have been changed to vases.
  • The bonus stage HUD pentagrams have been removed entirely.
