Toontown Online had its fair share of oddities throughout the game's lifespan, before and after the closure. Though most of them went unnoticed during its heyday, there's a lot more of them lurking throughout the game's files;

Filename Oddities
General Files
- Most instances of Cogs are referred to as "suits" in the game's files, except for the later updates that added newer Cog-based features like Cog Headquarters and Field Offices. Those were the original name for Cogs before they got changed.
- The texture for the Cog Building ToonTask graphic is called COG_Building, referencing the original capitalization of the Cogs.
- The files for Toon customization are referred to as dogA, dogB and dogC, relating to the Dog Toon Species. This was likely the first species that was designed for the game, as it appears to be a very early leftover.
- Multiple files for Chip 'n Dale's Acorn Acres is referred to as outdoor_zone, which is an earlier tentative name for the neighborhood.
- Texture files for Doodles are internally called Bean, implying it was one of the name choices for them during development.
Audio Files
- The music for the Toon Slingshot and Treasure Dive Trolley Games were switched at one point, as evidenced by Treasure Dive's music internally referred to as MG_Target and Toon Slingshot's music referred to as MG_Diving in phase_4.
- The sound effects for the Storm Cloud gag () classify it as Throw-type, when it is actually a Squirt Gag. It was most likely switched by accident.
- The music files for the Playground themes are marked as _nbrhood while the Street themes are marked as _SZ, likely standing for "Safe Zone" which is the internal name of Playgrounds. It's possible that the themes were originally switched around during development. Additionally, the Street Building themes are called _SZ_Activity, likely referring to the scrapped activities each Playground was planned to have according to development notes.
- The music for Goofy's Gag Shop is internally called FF_safezone.mid, which sorta lines up with the early naming scheme of locations in the previous paragraph, but isn't referred to as an abbreviation. "FF" likely stands for Funny Farm, considering the "old-timey" motif the song has to it, fitting the playground's intended theme and the fact it was present in the sv1.0.5 build, before Gag Shops were implemented in later versions. This further implies that this Playground was cut somewhat late.
- Strangely, the song is called "The Funny Farm" in the Jukebox at Toon Parties.
Object Files
- The Vines Wallpaper and the Football Border are the only ones to not have a regular variant, instead only being available as a recolorable option wall_paper_vine_neutral.jpg and {fn|football_border_neutral.jpg}}. Both of the regular variants would be found in the Spotify leak, as wall_paper_vine.rgb and football_border.rgb.
- The model filename for the Candy Couch is called twinkieCouch.bam, whereas the textures are called topHostessCupcake1.jpg, BottomHostessCupcake1.jpg and TTO_twinkieCouch1.jpg. This is likely a reference to the real-life Hostess Twinkie and Ding Dongs candy.
- The red Coffee Table is called coffeetableSq_BW.bam, whereas other Series 7 Pick-A-Color objects (and many other files in general) from the Cattlelog have BW in their model files. It's possible that the coffee table was originally supposed to be available in different color options.
- The texture for the blue bed in Series 7 is called blanketAdesat.jpg, despite only the railing being recolorable. It's possible that the bedsheets were going to be recolored too.
- The Texture used for the Sneakers and Toon Boots are called tt_t_chr_avt_acc_sho_converseStyle and tt_t_chr_avt_acc_sho_docMartinBoots respectively, referring to the real-life Doc Marten's and Converse brand.
- The patchwork blanket texture for the Bed object is called blanketA and blanketAdesat for the recolorable Bed. This suggests that a second pattern for the bed was planned, which is true as that can be found in the Spotify leak.
- The texture for the Sunburst Shirt and Gadzooks Shirt are referred to as tt_t_chr_avt_shirt_mostCogsDefeated04 and tt_t_chr_avt_shirt_racing05, implying they were supposed to be Contest-only clothing.
- The ValenToons clothing have odd naming schemes, suggesting that some designs were cut in development. The following apparent missing designs cannot be found in the Spotify leak;
- The first and third Shirt designs appear to be missing, along with the first Shorts design. The later-added ValenToons short uses tt_t_chr_avt_shorts_valentine1.jpg and tt_t_chr_avt_shorts_valentine1.jpg.
- The texture for the flaming heart shirt is called shirt2c, the only one to have an alphabetical naming scheme. This suggests that two alternate designs existed at some point.
- The fourth, fifth and sixth designs have Vday1 tacked onto the filename, suggesting that it was a "first run" of the ValenToons clothing. A second set would be released in the form of Shorts and a Skirt.
Texture Files
- The filename used for the boardwalk texture in Donald's Dock Playground is called floor2.jpg, which suggests that it may have been a flooring for interiors once. This is also further evidenced at the boardwalk "flooring" being available in Estates.
- The filename for the Birthday Cake texture is called cake2.jpg, suggesting it was a second type, which is true according to the Spotify leak and concept art.
- The texture used for the Race Game board is called track_shorter.jpg, suggesting that a "full" variant of the track existed which is true according to the source code leak.
- Many of the textures in Goofy Speedway are referred to as "Goofy Stadium", suggesting that the Playground was going to likely be named that, sharing the name with the scrapped Playground in the original plan.
- There are two identical, but curious textures found in phase_9 called ArmFactorysmokestackWarm.jpg and ArmFactorysmokestack2.jpg (in a grouped texture file), despite the rest of the Sellbot Factory textures internally being titled the Foot Factory. This is likely a leftover texture from the scrapped Arm Factory concept which was briefly shown in 2003 prerelease.
Textures | Bossbot Arm Factory |
---|---|
- The textures used for the Skelecog ties are cropped from some concept art of them, due to looking slightly different from their finalized 3D appearance. That concept art has not surfaced yet.
Model Files
- The filename for the default room in the Estate is called tt_m_ara_int_estateHouseA.bam. More types of Estate interiors were planned[footnote 1][1], but it never came to be during the game's lifespan.
- The model filename for Rustic Raceway is called RT_RuralB.bam, where it appears that a second racetrack based off it existed at one point. Airborne Acres is referred to as RT_RuralB2.bam.
- The model name for Goofy Speedway is called GasolineAlley_TT.bam, suggesting that the neighborhood's name was originally called that.
- The model name for the Sellbot Factory is called SellbotLegFactory.bam.
Other Files
- In foreign-language files, other language graphics including English can be found as early leftovers, such as German and Portuguese graphics being found in the French files for some reason. Those were likely leftovers as they were removed in an update, but have slight earlier localization differences, which is covered in another page.
- The Street M.A.P.S. graphics have "english" attached to the end of files (ex. daisys_garden_5100_english.jpg), which is used to distinguish between localized graphics, even though all foreign-language versions of the game closed as late as August 2011 and before the feature came out in January 2012 on the Test Server. Those equivalents aren't found in other files nor in developmental leaks.
- Oddly, there's a texture for the skybox used in The Brrrgh found in the phase files meant for Toontown Central (phase_3.5).
- There are duplicate Japanese localization textures for the newspaper prop used in the Market Crash attack, as newspaper_front_japanese, which keeps the same texture in English.
- The ValenToons Party invites are the only theme to have two separate graphics (tt_t_gui_pty_partyInvite_valentine1.jpg and tt_t_gui_pty_partyInvite_valentine2.jpg), the Victory Party and Winter Holiday Party textures are both called tt_t_gui_pty_partyInvite_victory1.jpg and tt_t_gui_pty_partyInvite_winter1.jpg respectively, implying there were supposed to be second invites.
Hidden Details
To do: Get model of the Cog Pack and take a picture of the Create-A-Toon Area with the concept art. |
Chicken Toon Species Concept Art
Hidden in Create-A-Toon is concept art for what appears to be the scrapped Toon Chicken species, located under the Pig Species that was considered for the Species Election before losing twice. If they aren't in the game, why is it there...?
Eyes Under Cog Pack
The Cog Pack contains a set of...eyes under the Flunky's glasses, which hard to be seen ingame. This pales in comparison to the used model of the Cog itself.
Clarabelle Cow Full model
Clarabelle Cow is fully modeled, despite her being partially covered up by the Cattlelog frame. The full model can be seen in one of the Toon News...for the Amused! articles, but not -in-game.
Hidden Lightbulb In Lamp Objects
To do: Compare with model itself, without shade and with shade than just texture rips. There's also other lamp objects that share that trait. |
Found inside the texture files for table lamps is a lightbulb, usually unable to be seen during normal gameplay
Rescued Street Building Portraits
To do: Find images of this in action. |
The portraits used to show Toons that have rescued street buildings from Cogs are actually flattened 3D models of the Toon heads, likely because using models would be easier than using image renders of every possible Toon combination. Notably, the backs of these Toon heads are still fully present, despite being impossible to see normally.
Repurposed Music Tracks
The following songs below were unused in earlier versions of the game, but would be repurposed as Jukebox music in Toon Parties in early 2009.
Trolley Song (trolley_song.mid)
Found in phase_4
Likely intended for the Gag Shop menu at the end of a Trolley Game due to its short looping length, but a different track is used instead.
The Big Boss (encntr_head_suit_theme.mid)
Found in phase_9
A theme that was originally used for fighting the Vice President before it was changed in an update and left unused.
Texture Oddities
Hidden Timer Graphic in Minigame Menu
Found within minigame-rules-panel is a hidden alternate timer graphic showing a dot than a timer. It's possible that there were supposed to be clock hands before switching to a numbered countdown.
Hidden buttons in Chat Menu
The Chat menu has hidden orange buttons that are always covered.
Colored Toon Battle Health Graphic
The graphic used for displaying a Toon's health and action used in battles (ToonBtl_Status_BG) is strangely colored white as opposed to the texture always being green in-game, where such colored textures are used for stuff in different color palettes. This suggests that it was likely supposed to change color during battle.
Early/Scrapped Content on Cattlelog Covers
The covers for Clarabelle's Cattlelog notably has early or scrapped elements on the front covers;
The Series 1 Cattlelog cover has wallpaper and flooring that is completely unavailable to purchase. The wallpaper was used for some of the shop interiors in Toontown Central in earlier versions.
The Series 2 Cattlelog cover has an earlier version of the Snowman Shirt.
The Series 3 Cattlelog cover has a scrapped sand Wainscoting, and the Underwater Wallpaper appears darker.
The Series 6 Cattlelog cover infamously contains a scrapped wallpaper of lollipops and a scrapped Window View of a candy playground. Additionally, the Moulding texture (molding_wood2.jpg) is in the game in several buildings, but it's not obtainable in the Estate.
Duplicated Party Textures
Found within newer phase files past the initial Toon Parties update, this texture sheet contains two exact duplicated Jukebox graphics, both of them being used for the 20 song and 40 song Jukebox options, but there's also two duplicated Trampoline graphics. Whether the Jukebox was planned to have even more songs, as evidenced by unused song title strings is unknown.
Membership Benefit Graphical Oddities
Fishing
The Fishing graphic (features-fishing.jpg) shows the activity with a different camera angle rather than a top-down view, though it is possible to get that view via a glitch.
Estates
The Rental graphic (features-rental.jpg) shows the target displayed in a different color. It's unknown if it was an earlier graphic or intended to change color.
Gardening
The Gardening graphic (features-garden.jpg) seen on the Membership Benefits shows the activity in a much earlier state; four plants could be planned in two different pots on the side rather than in one and the unused plant pot model can be seen.
Neighborhood Map
In earlier versions of the game, the map of the neighborhood was considerably different without the clouds covering up the then-unrevealed locations. The location for the scrapped Construction Zone area was originally edited over with unseen green fields and trees until it was changed to a blurred-out scrapped Contstruction Zone area in sv1.0.9.12, to match up with the overhauled Toontown Central map.

Earlier Cattlelog Order?
Exclusively in the French sv1.5.8.16.fr file contains a peculiar graphic called coverPicture5Cowboy.jpg, implying that the Western theme was originally going to be in Series 5 before it was moved to Series 4, and Series 5 being the Big Sale issue. The finalized graphic would be called cover4picture.jpg.
The graphic is identical to the final, and would be removed in later updates.

Dog Pupils
The pupils of dogs face in two different directions, and are the only species that has this oddity, furthermore in earlier models their eyes faced in the same direction.

Location Oddities
Hidden Moon Under Estates
When Estates were released on the Test Server, an upside-down moon could be seen if a Toon swam inside and clipped into the river tunnel. It was assumed that a day-night feature for the Estate was considered, as the sun seen at the top is a separate texture. This was later confirmed when one of the composers for the game shared a cut track for the estate, in both day and night variants.
Manholes in Cog HQs
After Bossbot HQ was released (sv1.0.32.17), manholes were placed in all of the Cog Headquarters. No official information was released about them during the game's lifespan.
Earlier Bossbot HQ Country Clubhouse Tower
To do: Replace image with a model, and the model itself shown ingame. |
An earlier version of the Bossbot HQ Country Clubhouse Tower found out of bounds.
Unused Tunnel in Acorn Acres
To do:
|
This infamous tunnel in Chip 'n Dale's Acorn Acres was always under construction, and was never opened at all during the game's lifespan. Some time after the tunnel was released, an article was published to Toontown Brazil's website stating that behind the tunnel "were no Cogs".[footnote 2][2]
At a Q&A during the fan-organized 2016 ToonFest Event, Jesse Schell, Toontown Online's director, stated that the tunnel had no purpose, and was there if the development team wanted to create a new area they hadn't thought of yet.
Miscellaneous Oddities
Cannon Rental Text Spacing
RentalHours = "Hours" RentalOf = "Of" RentalCannon = "Cannons!"
The text strings for the 48 Hours of Cannons Cattlelog item are separated for some reason, despite appearing as a normal item there.
Unseen 16th Gag Track Frame
The final Gag track training film frame for any given track is never viewable, as the training film frames are automatically cleared upon obtaining a new track.
Undefined Cog Attack Phrases
The Cog attacks Fill With Lead and Double Talk do not have any battle phrases defined, and instead use the default phrase of "Take a memo on this!"
Glad Hander Attacks
To do: Add the source code comments from the RobotToonManager scripts, as they should still be accurate to the final game. |
The Glad Hander's Fountain Pen and Rubber Stamp damage statistics make this the only Cog to have the distinction of doing less damage with these two attacks at higher levels. According to source code leaks, this may be because these two attacks were meant to be placeholders and every single attack involving this Cog were meant to involve attacks with talking animations (e.g., Schmooze and Filibuster, the other two attacks Glad Handers can use). The attacks and their damage values were never changed throughout the entire game's lifespan.
The Big Cheese Attacks
To do: Add the source code comments from the RobotToonManager scripts, as they should still be accurate to the final game. |
Likely due to an oversight, The Big Cheese's version of Glower Power is the only attack in the game that deals a variable range of damage and accuracy (ex. 20-22 damage at level 12). Source code comments have confirmed that this is because the game occasionally tries to choose one of their three unused attacks (Flood the Market, Cigar Smoke, or Song and Dance) - the attacks are coded to default to Glower Power instead if chosen by the enemy AI, but the damage and accuracy of each attack don't default to Glower Power's values as well. Although other Cogs still have their respective unused attacks left in the source code, the attacks are commented out so that the game never tries to choose them. The Big Cheese does not have its unused attacks commented out, which causes this effect. Interestingly, these variable damage values were included on the official series 3 trading cards produced later into the games' lifespan.
Big Wig Attacks
To do: Why does this happen? |
Big Wigs will always say "Now see here Toon." phrase when using Finger Wag, and will never use any of the other phrases that other Cogs can use for this attack.
