This article is a work in progress. ...Well, all the articles here are, in a way. But this one moreso, and the article may contain incomplete information and editor's notes. |
Within the PR Discs, there are five document files that contain some interesting information from development that was unearthed in 2016.
Later on August 21st, 2021, a Perforce PC port branch containing the source code to The Simpsons: Hit & Run was leaked on 4chan. In addition to code, it also contains art assets, documents and internal tools used to develop the game. Many of these files are dated May 2003, around the time the game was revealed at E3 but some of the contents inside the documents are dated even earlier.

Story
Later Story Ideas
Found in a file called SIMPSONS 2 - Story-Mission Integration Ideas.doc and SIMPSONS 2 - Story-Mission Integration Ideas2.doc contain a list of ideas for the finalized story.
- Originally, some of the characters were originally going to be replaced with clones to "bring more zest" to the town for Kang and Kodos' reality television show. An example bought up was Marge Simpson, where she acts more "strangely and recklessly" which would be noticed by one of the five core characters, who must find the real Marge's whereabouts and rescue her. The idea was possibly reworked into Bart acting strangely from being abducted by Kang and Kodos at the end of Level 2 and having temporary memory loss.
- As an alternative, Kang and Kodos would have bought characters from other time periods, such as a younger Homer Simpson or "alternate" characters like making Fallout Boy real, using Milhouse as a plot point.
- Using a myth of Alien presence having an effect of technology as an example, Truckasaurus was originally going to run rampant around Downtown Springfield as an "obstacle" before being downgraded to a planned boss and eventually a FMV. The paragraph also noted that the blimp could also be disguised as an alien spaceship, where it may have served inspiration for the Duff Brewery hideout at the end of the Level 6 FMV. In the next paragraph, other examples such as causing railway barriers to move erratically, cranes to swing and traffic signs to alternate were also considered as obstacles, but no such events happen in the final game.
- In the fifth paragraph, Space collectable cards were brands of Kang and Kodos' reality show where they would be found in the world. The cards themselves would contain a picture of the playable character, while on the other side would contain strange, otherworldly alien writing. Collecting the cards would piece together the location of the alien ship. They would likely be repurposed into semi-unrelated collectable Buzz Cola cards as extras than being important to the story.
Missions
Earlier Mission Names
To do: Look at Missiontitles.xls. |
Found in many of the documents are earlier mission titles that would be changed sometime after March 28, 2003, according to the story outline document from the PR disc. In MissionTitles.xls, at least around four title contenders were picked for each mission. This document appears to be incomplete as, not all of the finalized mission names appear and there aren't as many suggestions in the later Levels.
The titles are exactly transcribed from the file. The ones that would be picked for the final are marked in bold, or are remotely similar are marked in italics.

Vehicles
Vehicle Tuning Plan and Progress Chart
A document called Vehicle Tuning Plan and Progress Chart.doc, found in design/vehicles, shows an earlier list of vehicles. The document was created on Janaury 28, 2003, while it appeared to have been updated on February 24, 26, and March 26, 28, 2003.
- The Fire Truck was being considered as an unlockable vehicle.
- The Police Cruiser was considering being placed in the reward structure.
- The rocket-powered WWII Vehicle wasn't present.
Choosing Sounds for Vehicles
Found in design/vehicles, is a document with sounds for vehicles, conveniently called Vehicle Engine Sounds.doc, which is dated June 17, 2003, right after E3 2003. These are the different following sounds;
- The Clown Car, Knight Boat, 50s Style Car had a sound marked as "TBD".
The following vehicle functions and names were also different, which would be changed in the Vehicle List.doc
- The Malibu Stacy Car had the placeholder name "Vette", due to the car originally being based off a real-life 1989 Corvette.
- The Kremlin was originally called the "Gremlin", likely as an error or referring to the vehicle's original real-life basis called the AMC Gremlin.
- The rocket-powered WWII Vehicle, used exclusively in the game's final mission, was intended to be buyable, though marked as an unknown Level.
Near-Final Cars List
Found in design/vehicles is a near-final list of vehicles called Vehicle List.doc, likely dated from sometime later from the prior document. There are a few interesting differences found in the document;
- Apu's default vehicle in Level 5 was called the Firebird rather than the Longhorn, matching his original vehicle from Road Rage.
- The El Carrio Loco was called the El Camino, likely the original name of the real-life car.
- The Fire Truck unlockable is marked as New for some reason, along with it being marked as a "Special Level 1 Bonus"
- The RC car's location was tentatively marked as a "Store Front".
- The Cell Phone Car, Cube Van, Nonup Family Minivan and Milk Truck are marked as "X", signifying it is not given out as a reward, but candidates for a cheat vehicle. All of the vehicles on the last page would be available via cheats in the final.

Cut Wasp Camera
/documents/design/Game Features/Wasp Gameplay.doc contains information about a cut Wasp camera.
"In various pre-determined areas across the levels the wasp cameras are “watching” a potentially interesting location (i.e. jumps, landmark). When the player comes close to this location a trigger will activate the special “WASP view” of the location (cut camera). The wasp camera will include a visually unique camera lens and alien writing. If the player performs the action associated with this location the wasp will be attracted to the player."
Unused Staff Nicknames
/documents/design/credits/team_nicknames.xls is a table of nominated nicknames for all of the Radical Entertainment staff. Originally, these nicknames were going to be used in the end credits, likely in a similar manner to the staff credits of the Treehouse of Horror episodes from the series (usually in the format of First "Nickname" Last). The "Chosen" field is entirely empty, likely due to this idea being removed before any nicknames were chosen, but the empty field is included here for the sake of posterity.

Early 2003 Game Data
To do: Tons of scrapped billboard gags. |
A document called Master Content List.xls shows a list of content that was implemented in the game. It's possible that it's around early 2003 due to armored vans not being available in the game at that stage, as evidenced by a similar document THE VEHICLES OF HIT.doc from April 18, 2003.
Notably, many of the elements are marked in blue, suggesting they are new additions. Also, most of them haven't been approved by FOX at that stage.
General Differences
- All of the Collector's Cards items are completed, but not yet graphic or text approved at this point.
- Vehicles were originally going to be separated into three categories of rarity; "Generic Traffic Vehicles", "Infrequent Vehicles" and "Special Vehicles". The final game just has all vehicles appearing equally. Below is a list of how it they would spawn;
Generic Traffic Vehicles | Infrequent Vehicles | Special Vehicles |

As Desired | As Desired | As Desired |
- The infamous cut Ice Cream Van was going to appear in Level 1, but was completely cut from the game.
- The Buzz Cola glass truck doesn't appear on the list.
Location Differences
- Though much of the location is finalized, the following buildings have been cut
- In the Suburbs;
- Casa Nova, located in Zone 2, near the Springfield Church.
- Malibu Stacy House, likely the house that appears in Lisa Vs. Malibu Stacy.
- In the Suburbs;
Gag Changes
A few of the Gags that appear on the list were cut from the game, where most of them had not been implemented or approved, unless noted.
Suburbs (Level 1, 4, 7)
- The document lists scrapped Doorbell Gags for Cletus Outhouse, Ford's House, Terrace Church and the School Interior Door. The former would contain five lines of dialogue while the latter three would have four.
- There is a scrapped Melted Down Guns Playground Equipment, where sliding down the slide causes the guns to fire.
- The Rock of Shame, Rock of Triumph in the Stonecutters' Tunnel was intended to be a physics-based obstacle for the car.
- Originally, interacting with the Arcade Machines gag would cause textures to change, rather than a separate FMV to play. This sort-of ties in with unused audio for the arcade game being played in-game.
- A "Halloween" version of the Squishee Machine was planned, where pressing the action "causes Wiggum's legs to rotate". This was likely intended for Level 7.
- A cut gag in Bart's Bedroom originally involved a character named Normal The Hamster where they would have flown a plane around the room.
Downtown (Levels 2 and 5)
- A Screaming Monkey and Lard Lad doorbell was planned, each having four lines of dialogue.
- There was a monkey Gag planned on top of Lard Lad's near the construction site, where getting close to it would throw coins at the player.
- There is also a cut extending ladder Gag on the Fire Truck, where pressing the button would extend the ladder and slide down while collecting coins.
- A cut X-Ray Gag was planned, where interacting with it would show an x-ray of the character.
- An outdoor evidence locker Gag was planned for the Springfield Police Station, where opening would reveal coins.
- A destroyable ATM machine Gag was planned where destroying it would give the user coins. It's possible that the element was reworked into the Buzz Cola machines found around the Levels.
- The Stonehenge World Tour was supposed to appear as an obstacle where smashing into it would damage the car.
- There was supposed to be a "Ming Vases - Bowling Balls of China" exhibit near the museum.
- A Sit-And-Rotate elevator gag was planned, where a physics-based object would "hide" the entrance to the elevator. Going inside to the top would award the player with a panorama view.
Seaside (Levels 3 and 6)
- Originally, Bart and/or Lisa was supposed to touch the boar's head and say a voice clip of "Ew", but in the final interacting with the Gag just makes audible fly noises.
- Seagulls were supposed to be interacted with, where they would spit out coins.
- The Electronic Automatic Robotic Lighthouse, E.A.R.L. (From El Viaje Misterioso de Nuestro Jomer) was supposed to be breakable rather than the "spotlight silhouette" appearing as an easter egg.
- The Slinky Spring was supposed to appear on a staircase, but it isn't specified where.
April 2003 Vehicles
In the PR Disc, there is a document file called THE VEHICLES OF HIT.doc, dating to April 18, 2003 and containing a near-finalized list of vehicles.
- The following vehicles were planned to be included at this stage;
- Burns Armored Truck
- Fish Van
- Garbage Truck
- Ice Cream Truck
- Itchy and Scratchy Movie Truck
- Nuclear Waste Truck
- Pizza Van
- Vote Quimby Truck
- The vehicles from Level 7 were considering to be drivable.
- The following vehicles were planned to be drivable via AI and restricted to cheats rather than being bought;
- Armored Truck
- Chase Sedan
- Cola Truck
- Curator
- Donut Truck
- Duff Truck
- Hearse
- Krusty's Limo
- Limo
- Nerd Car
- Police Car
- Surveillance Van
- It was mentioned that some of the vehicles would be accessible via cheats, but all of them are, except for the Charred Husk.
Simpsons Video Library
There is a document called Simpsons Video Library - Episode List.xls, found in design/references that contains almost all of the episodes up to Season 15, used to design the game's setting for development. The episodes go up to The Regina Monologues, which was aired over two months after the game was released. It's likely because it was a carryover from the Season 14 production line (EABF).
Oddly it contains five episodes from a show from the same creator, Futurama for unknown reasons. The episodes are Parasites Lost, A Tale of Two Santas, Luck of the Fryish, Anthology of Interest II and Roswell That Ends Well.
Collectible Items Draft
To do: Expand on this. Some of them were reworked into collector's items and outfits. Also there's an earlier revision of the document before Fox made notes. Also is there anything for the Bart section? |
In a document file called Bonus Collectible items.doc and Objects with FOX and Legal replacements.doc (dated June 10, 2002), found in design/references are a list of items that are tied to specific characters and from various episodes of the show. Many of these would be made into Collector Cards, Outfits and Gags found around the setting.
Text marked in blue is likely done by FOX.

Early | Episode | Final | Episode | Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|
Homer's Monorail Hat | Marge vs. The Monorail | Homer's jacket | Secrets of a Successful Marriage | Unknown change. |
B Sharps Record Cover | Homer's Barbershop Quartet | Smeared t-shirt of Marge | The Last Temptation of Homer | Changed to avoid infringing with The Beatles' Abbey Road cover, the cover art for which the album parodies. |
Homer's Girlie Cake | Treehouse of Horror VI | Smarch Calendar | Treehouse of Horror VI | Changed to likely avoid ESRB rating and the fact it was only found in the 3D world (in Homer³) would be an odd idea. FOX suggested to replace it with a Smarch Calendar from the same episode. |
Bart’s love-letter & picture to Mrs. K (picture features Gordie Howe) | Bart the Lover | Bart's check written to Krusty | Bart the Fink | Likely changed to avoid paying celebrity loyalties. |
Lost ending to Casablanca | Worst Episode Ever | Bart's Sash from Junior Campers | Boy-Scoutz 'n the Hood | Changed to avoid referencing copyrighted material. |
Marge’s painting of Ringo Starr | Brush With Greatness | Pretzel Wagon delivery box | The Twisted World of Marge Simpson | Likely changed to avoid paying celebrity loyalties. |
- Frink is oddly listed as an important character, suggesting that he was going to be playable but Apu isn't there.
- Marge's Chanel Suit is listed, but was noted that all "CC" branding must be removed.
- The Denver Broncos Football Helmet from You Only Move Twice is listed as a rejected collectable likely due to copyright.
- The drinking bird from King-Sized Homer was going to appear but was rejected by FOX.
- Kirk Van Houten's "Can I borrow a Feeling?" tape was going to appear (from A Milhouse Divided}, only if the tape is seen and no singing is heard.
Other
- Legal for fox.doc contains a complete list of Bart's famous chalkboard Gags in the show up to The Sweetest Apu (Season 13, Episode 19, DABF14) suggesting that they were going to appear like the randomized signboards in Springdale Elementary and the Community Center. It doesn't happen, nor the room can be accessed.
Unused Icon
The game/cd/PC directory has a file called BART.ICO, not mentioned in any other file. The image is one of many fan made Simpsons icons created and shared online by Jeanette Foshee in the mid-90s.
Controller Diagrams
Located in documents/design/Core Design/Controller diagrams is, interestingly enough, an image of a prototype GameCube controller, resembling the design shown at Spaceworld 2000.
It's pretty close to the final design, but with a couple of noticeable differences:
- The handles are considerably shorter.
- The font used on the buttons is different.
- The A and B buttons are blue and green respectively, the same color scheme used on the Nintendo 64 controller, rather than green and red.
- The B button uses the same design as the Y and X buttons.
- The START/PAUSE button is a huge red ball, again colored like the one on the N64 controller, as opposed to a circular gray button.
- The START/PAUSE text is colored gray and painted on, while the final design has the letters etched into the controller. It's also slightly bigger.
Another image of the prototype GameCube controller exists, but with a diagram of the game's controls written in Comic Sans.
Unused Steering Wheel
To do: See if it works. |
In the source code there are two scripts called steeringspring.cpp and steeringwheel.cpp, these contain scripts and comments relating to compatibility with the Logitech WingMan Formula Force GP USB steering wheel.
void SteeringWheel::Init( IRadController* pController ) { // Clear the properties m_bPedalInverted = false; if( pController != NULL ) { // Check for the wingman - a bad bad wheel. m_bPedalInverted = (_stricmp( pController->GetType(), "Logitech WingMan Formula Force GP USB") == 0); } // Connect RealController::Init( pController ); }
