Mario Animations
"chase" Animations
Mario walking and chasing with his arms out. His hands are also positioned differently.
A chasing animation, which seems to be for Mario when he is chasing MIPS or something or someone else.
Yet another chasing animation, this time with Mario in full sprint.
"climb" Animations
A different climbing animation which depicts Mario climbing a wall, possibly a chain link fence or ladder. Mario cannot climb up the sides of walls in the final game.
Mario moving down while climbing something.
A similar climbing animation, but Mario is facing left.
Another climbing animation, with Mario facing right.
"float" Animations
An animation of Mario floating in water. This was used in the SpaceWorld 1995 demo.
Mario slowly wading through water. This was not used in the SpaceWorld '95 demo.
An early animation of Mario grabbing something, such as a shell, while underwater.
Mario holding onto something underwater, presumably a shell or cork box.
Mario throwing something while underwater, which he cannot do in the final game.
Waking Up Animation
An earlier animation of Mario waking up. Based on the name, it would have triggered when A was pressed while sleeping.
"hatwait" Animations
An earlier animation of Mario taking his cap off after completing a goal, like a mission or a Star.
The same idea, but instead Mario puts his cap back on.
"log" Animations
An animation where Mario lands on a narrow log or plank.
Seems to be a nervous Mario balancing precariously on a narrow log.
Mario stepping his left leg ahead on a narrow log.
Similar to the above, but with Mario stepping with his right leg.
Seems to be for Mario almost falling off a narrow log, maybe for being too close to the edge, or knocked off balance by a strong gust of wind. Interestingly, this animation was repurposed for use in the 64DD boot logo.
The same animation as above, but Mario is facing right instead.
"mant" Animations
Based on the name, it appears to be Mario changing flying modes during flight. This could have been a way for Mario to slow down or maybe come to a complete stop while flying.
Mario landing after falling and flying.
Mario landing from jumping, or getting off of a ledge or platform.
"mario_slip" Animations
Seems to be Mario preparing to speed up while sliding. Of note, this animation uses an earlier version of the animation format, even having different joint orders, making this one of the earliest files in the leak.
Mario braking while he is sliding, possibly when the player holds back on the joystick. This animation also uses an earlier version of the animation format with different joint orders, making this another one of the earliest files to be found in the leak.
"notaking" Animations
Based on the name, it appears to have occurred when taking or picking up something failed.
Part 2 of the above animation, where Mario returns to his regular idle position.
"oshin" Animations
Mario covering his face. "oshin" translates to "nausea", so it might've been when Mario got nauseous. This potentially occurred on the ship in Jolly Roger Bay, which has unreferenced shake code in the files.
A similar animation to the last one, but with Mario walking.
Pulling Animation
Mario pulling something heavy with both arms, digging his heels into the ground as he moves backwards.
"punch" Animations
An earlier version of the punching animation.
An earlier animation of Mario picking something up.
"slip" Animations
A faster and updated version of mario_slip_accele.
A faster and updated version of mario_slip_brake.
Mario steering left while sliding, but his arms are motionless. This is similar to his sliding animation in the SpaceWorld '95 demo.
Mario steering right while sliding. Again, his arms are motionless.
"squatkick" Animations
The start of the "Squat Kick", a move that was cut early on. Based on the name, it was likely replaced with the Sweep Kick move in the final game.
Mario in the middle of doing the Squat Kick.
The ending animation for the Squat Kick.
"swim" Animations
Mario chasing something/someone while swimming.
Seems to be Mario picking something up underwater, similar to floattake.
An earlier animation of Mario carrying something while swimming.
Looks like a more detailed animation for Mario jumping underwater. Interestingly, it appears to be synced to waterwait, meaning it might have been for the earlier version of the Metal Cap.
Mario ceasing swimming, synced to floating, maybe meant for when the player stops making him swim.
An early version of Mario drowning, but he is spinning instead of staying in one direction like the final game.
Taking Animation
Mario picking something up, but lifting it instead of grabbing it.
"water" Animations
Similar to swimstop but faster. Likely meant for landing underwater, possibly with the Metal Cap.
Mario idle while underwater, which is similar to his normal standing idle animation as he moves his head from left to right. It might have been for an early version of the Metal Cap, as it syncs well with the running animation.
Star Dance Animation
Mario performing an extended version of his Power Star victory dance. This is the only animation in the leak that seems to be motion captured.
Lost Animations
Animations that no longer exist but are referenced by names in "shapedef". Names will be presented with their animation reference names, as their actual file names are unknown.
animeCannonJump
Likely for leaving the cannon, instead of firing. The final game has no way to leave the cannon without firing.
animeDash
An unused dashing animation, likely the one seen in the above concept art. It bears a similarity to Wario's Dash Attack.
A somewhat-broken mockup made using the final game's assets.
animeUTurnCont
Possibly for turning repeatedly. A duplicate, unreferenced animation exists in the final game, but shapedef indicates it was originally a separate file.
animeTitleDemo
Possibly the animation seen in 1995 B-Roll footage. Was likely used for the early title screen with RCP_MarioTitle and RCP_TitleLuigi.
