Development:Pokémon Red and Blue/Pokémon Data
This is a sub-page of Development:Pokémon Red and Blue.
Various bits of data related to Pokémon, be it moves, encounter rates, or even evolutionary data.
Evolutionary Requirements
Found in SHINKA.SAV, as opposed to the final games' SHINKA.DAT, is this file which documents both early evolution data, as well as early learnsets. "Shinka" simply translates to "Evolution", and while the .sav lacks a date, we know that the .dat was finalized on November 25th 1995, three months prior the games' release. The evolution-related portion of the early .sav file is as follows:

Movesets
Only around half of the Pokémon entries in SHINKA.SAV have a moveset associated with them, and as such only the entries with one will be listed below for the sake of clarity. What's extremely odd is that the number of moves listed here exceeds the 165 that was seen in even the earliest movelist file, reaching a total of 237 entries. The moves linked to these entries are unknown, though via some cross-referencing, a possible reconstruction of the aforementioned "237 List" was made, and will be provided below:

*Oddly enough, this dungeon's entry is missing entirely, despite being seen on early route maps. |
Moreover, the end of this encounter table contains encounter data for dungeons unaccounted for in the final games:

*The original incarnation of the Pokémon League reveal that it once consisted of a series of throwbacks to previous dungeons. This first floor, for example, uses a duplicate of the early Viridian Forest rates. However, the levels were all raised significantly, fitting with the idea of a final dungeon. |

*This entry is really interesting, as in the final games it was repurposed for the first floor of Victory Road, keeping its internal name and all. This reveals that early in development, Victory Road only had two floors. The area in itself, however, is themed around Rock Tunnel. |

*Two really interesting entries to conclude this file! Leaked internal data reveals that Silph Co. once featured a secondary dungeon, which acted as a gauntlet where the player would have to defeat trainers as they ascend. The fact this is the only floor with wild encounters seems to infer that it was the final floor, which, while missing from the leaks, was seemingly a sort of artificial wild area built indoors. Most shocking of all is that Mewtwo is listed a regular encounter, who in the final games was turned into a static encounter in the Cerulean Cave. |

Found within MVOICE.H and MVOICE.DAT are the internal names for the various "default" Pokémon cries, also known as "base cries". According to the source code, they are internally named as follows:

30 | karabatheo | MissingNo. (181) | Tauros MissingNo. (69) Zubat Golbat Squirtle Wartortle |
Name is an alternate romanization of Caravaggio, Blastoise's original name from the Capsule Monsters era. A strikingly similar cry (albeit a bit slower, and down-pitched) would later be used for Crobat in Pokémon Gold and Silver.
31 | mimi | Starmie | Mew Staryu Parasect Paras Mewtwo |
Name is Staryu's original name from the Capsule Monsters era. This was likely its original cry, before being assigned to Starmie.
32 | yaddohogera | Slowbro | Growlithe Machoke Omanyte Omastar Machop Machamp |
Name is composed of "Yaddon" (Slowpoke) and "hogera", thus basically translating into the placeholder name "Yado-whatever". Clearly intended for Slowbro, whose final Japanese name is Yadoran.
33 | No34 | None | Mr. Mime Krabby Kingler |
"Number 34" corresponds to Onix internally. This could mean that this might have been its original cry, or that the Pokémon it was created for was eventually overwritten by Onix, therefore leaving the cry unused.
34 | No36 | None | Psyduck Golduck Bellsprout |
Same as Onix's case, but in this case, "Number 36" corresponds to Pidgey.
35 | dog | Rattata | MissingNo. (79) Raticate |
May have been originally intended for Growlithe, which is nearby in the index list and is basically called "Guard doggie" in Japanese. Interestingly, the earliest user of this cry in the internal list is a fish-like MissingNo. that was ultimately scrapped. However, this MissingNo. doesn't use the "original" cry. In the final game, this cry was instead assigned to Rattata.
36 | kingthaurus | None | Aerodactyl Vileplume |
Name appears to be based on Kingsaurus III, a kaiju from the Ultraman series.
37 | sutegon | Graveler | Vulpix Ninetales Geodude |
Name is an alternate romanization of Stegon, yet another Ultraman series kaiju.
38 | eleking | Ponyta | Rapidash Porygon Weepinbell Victreebel |
Eleking is, once again, an Ultraman series kaiju. |
The presence of Ultraman kaiju can easily be explained by the developers being avid fans of the series.
