This is a sub-page of Development:Pokémon Red and Blue.

Miscellaneous bits of data, be it related to moves, internal names, trainer rosters, or even items.

Move Lists

Proper list of moves exist in two files within the leaked data. The first one is known as WAZA_TBL.SAV, and consists of a list of both stats and move names, though as it turns out the name of these moves is reused from an earlier iteration of the move roster, as it is full of scrapped/duplicate moves and blank entries. The second file, EFF_TBL.DMG, meanwhile, only contains move names, but this selection is already much closer to the final one, aside from a few outliers.

A third file also exists, this one known as WAZA_SE.DAT and documenting move sound effects. It is virtually identical to EFF_TBL.DMG, aside from Upper Cut being replaced with Pay Day, there referred to as "Okane", which literally translates to "Money". However, Upper Cut is still referenced, albeit in a commented-out form. Interestingly enough, there, entry 165 and 166 are occupied by seemingly placeholder moves known only as "Seikou" (Success) and "Sippai" (Failure) respectively, with the former also being mentioned in EFFECTED.DAT. In comparison, in the final games entry 165 was overwritten by Struggle, and entry 166 doesn't even exist as the move list stops at Struggle.

Overworld Sprites Internal Names

A file found which documents internal names for an earlier iteration of the overworld spriteset. While at first glance identical to the early "OBJ_#.DAT" overworld spritesheet, it actually contains enough differences to prove that it corresponds to a later version of it, with the changes listed in bold in the table for the sake of clarity:

  • Spot 14 is labeled as "Morimori" (Bulging Muscles), but OBJ_#.DAT instead uses a scrapped alternate design for the little girl NPC. This is likely the "burly man" spriteset used by Hikers, one of the few missing from OBJ_#.DAT.
  • Spot 17 is labeled as "Ane" (Big Sister), but OBJ_#.DAT instead uses the sprite for the Bike Shop owner. This is likely the spriteset used by Daisy Oak, one of the few missing from OBJ_#.DAT. The Bike Shop owner was later relocated to spot 21.
  • Spot 51 is labeled as "Okaasan" (Mother), but OBJ_#.DAT instead uses an early version of "Otousan" (Father) which lacks shading, the player's mother instead found at spot 58.
  • All the sprites from slots 59 to 71 are missing in OBJ_#.DAT. Meanwhile, there, spot 56 is instead occupied by a scrapped alternate design for the gamer boy (here seen playing a Virtual Boy), 57 is some sort of whirlpool (perhaps a precursor to the warp pad), and 58 is the player's mother (moved to spot 51).

Another entry was added in the final games, and the Pokémon were beefed-up overall. Moreover, the Pokémon selection was tweaked across the board, with the rival namely using a high-leveled Magikarp that is nowhere to seen in the final games (though there he still ends up using a Gyarados). The inclusion of Magikarp is interesting, as Sugimori later revealed that at one point the rival was supposed to be a "Gyarados trainer" named "Gyarao". While this idea was likely short-lived, it's interesting to see how early on in development your rival was already planned to have a Gyarados.

Not only were all his Pokémon beefed-up, but it appears that your rival was originally intended to have the final evolution of all three starters for this fight, instead of the one that is strong against the one you chose at the start of the game. Moreover, Alakzam and Rhydon were added to his team.

Item List

An early iteration of the item list, found under ITEMNAME.SAV (as opposed to the finalized ITEMNAME.DAT), and featuring some interesting changes.

Decimal Early Item Index Final Item Index Notes
001 パワーエサ (PowerFeed) Master Ball Completely different item. May have been able to strengthen the user when consumed.
002 ネムリコナ (Sleep Powder) Ultra Ball Completely different item. May have been able to put the enemy to sleep.
003 スーパーボール (Great Ball) Great Ball Same as final.
004 モンスターボール (Poké Ball) Poké Ball Same as final.
005 タウンマップ (Town Map) Town Map Same as final.
006 ジテンシャ (Bicycle) Bicycle Same as final.
007 ラプラス (Lapras) ????? An "item version" of the Pokémon Lapras. This item still exists in the final game, though goes unused and had its name dummied out. When used, it allows the player to surf without requiring a Pokémon or the necessary badge. May have much later been reworked into the idea of Poké Rides in Sun and Moon, with Lapras actually being one of the available Pokémon Rides.
008 ??? (???) Safari Ball Not yet implemented.
009 ポケモンファイル (Pokémon File) Pokédex An earlier name for the Pokédex, which in the final game is known as ポケモンずかん (Pokémon Encyclopedia). This item still exists in the final game, though goes unused. When used, it allows the player to open the Pokédex, both in and out of battle, though doing it while in a battle will mess up the VRAM and cause graphical issues. It's possible the devs may have once intended for the player to be able to use the Pokédex even in battle, as to see the description of new Pokémon, like in the anime.
010 ツキのイシ (Moon Stone) Moon Stone Same as final.
011 ドクケシ (Antidote) Antidote Same as final.

022 ??? (???) CascadeBadge Not yet implemented. This item still exists in the final game, though goes unused, had its name replaced with that of a badge, and had its behavior overwritten with that of the Safari Zone's "Throw Rock" function.
023 ??? (???) ThunderBadge This item still exists in the final game, though goes unused and had its name replaced with that of a badge.
024 ??? (???) RainbowBadge This item still exists in the final game, though goes unused and had its name replaced with that of a badge.
025 ??? (???) SoulBadge This item still exists in the final game, though goes unused and had its name replaced with that of a badge.
026 ??? (???) MarshBadge This item still exists in the final game, though goes unused and had its name replaced with that of a badge.
027 ??? (???) VolcanoBadge This item still exists in the final game, though goes unused and had its name replaced with that of a badge.
028 ??? (???) EarthBadge This item still exists in the final game, though goes unused and had its name replaced with that of a badge.

039 リゾチウム (Calcium) Calcium Same as final.
040 フシギナアメ (Rare Candy) Rare Candy Same as final.
041 コウラのカセキ (Dome Fossil) Dome Fossil Same as final.
042 カイのカセキ (Helix Fossil) Helix Fossil Same as final.
043 ツバサのカセキ (Wing Fossil) Secret Key Completely different item. Rather intriguing as the Old Amber already exists, as seen earlier in the list. Possibly an earlier version of Aerodactyl's fossil which was later overwritten.
044 ??? (???) ????? Same as final.
045 ダミーボンバー (Dummy Bomber) Bike Voucher Completely different item. May have later been reworked into the Smoke Bomb item introduced in Generation II, with the idea of a potentially distracting lure becoming that of a smoke bomb.
046 100Pパワー (100P Power) X Accuracy Completely different item. May have offered an Attack boost during combat.
047 リーフのイシ (Leaf Stone) Leaf Stone Same as final.
048 カードキー (Card Key) Card Key Same as final.
049 キンのタマ (Nugget) Nugget Same as final.

051 ピッピニンギョウ (Poké Doll) Poké Doll Same as final.
052 ナンデモナオシ (Full Heal) Full Heal Same as final.
053 ゲンキのカケラ (Revive) Revive Same as final.
054 ゲンキのモト (Max Revive) Max Revive Same as final.
055 エフェクトガード (Guard Spec.) Guard Spec. Same as final.
056 ゴーリキーハンド (Strong Hand) Super Repel Completely different item. May have been able to give the holder a physical boost, as seen by its name, which references the Pokémon Machoke, whose Japanese name comes from the term "superhuman strength". Thus, this item's name could be read as either "Strong Hand" or "Machoke Hand".
057 ヒデンのショ (Secret Book) Max Repel Completely different item. Unknown what use it may have had originally. Might have been a key item.
058 クリチカッター (Dire Hit) Dire Hit Same as final.
059 パチンコダマ (PachinkoBall) Coin This item still exists in the final game, though goes unused. Can be stacked in the inventory, but cannot be stored in a Coin Case, and attempting to use it displays Professor Oak's "This isn't the time to use that!" message. An earlier version of the Celadon City casino coins, which as seen by the unused behavior would have seemingly not required a Coin Case (an item which is missing from this item list). Interestingly, this item's early name refers to pachinko balls, while the final one refers to slot machine tokens, which may infer that Celadon City's casino once hosted pachinko machines instead of slot machines.
060 オイシイミズ (Fresh Water) Fresh Water Same as final.
061 アツイオシルコ (Hot Soup) Soda Pop An earlier version of the Soda Pop item.
062 フルーツオレ (Fruit au Lait) Lemonade An earlier version of the Lemonade item, which in Japan is called "Mix Au Lait" (ミックスオレ).
063 フジのテガミ (Fuji Letter) S.S. Ticket Completely different item. May have once been a key item, given its association with Mr. Fuji. It's unclear if it was intended to be delivered to him, or if he was the one handing us the letter. Regardless, the only delivery mission in the final games consists of delivering Oak's Parcel, an item which is missing from this list.
064 キンのイレバ (Gold Teeth) Gold Teeth Same as final.
065 スピーダー (X Speed) X Attack Was shifted around during development.
066 プラスパワー (X Attack) X Defend Was shifted around during development.
067 デイフェンダー (X Defend) X Speed Was shifted around during development.

Found in USEITEM.DMG is an ID list for the main items, with most entries having a comment besides them. Said comment is more often than not a romanization of the item's name, and thus only noteworthy entries will be documented.

Decimal Comment Final Item Notes
032 honouno kimuchi Fire Stone Name translates to "Fire Kimchi", with "kimchi" being a Korean dish. As seen across the list, it appears that the evolutionary stones started out as elemental snacks. The only outlier is the Moon Stone, and thus it's unclear if the other "stones" were also evolution items. If anything, it's possible that they may have been items which, when eaten, gave the user a type boost, not unlike the berries from later entries in the series.
033 kaminariokoshi Thunderstone A "kaminari-okoshi" is a sweet rice cracker, whose name comes from the "Kaminarimon gate" (Thunger gate) of Tokyo's Sensō-ji temple, where it is said to have been created.
034 mizuyoukan Water Stone A "yōkan" is a kind of dessert made out of red bean paste and agar, with a "mizu yōkan" consisting of the same recipe, but with more water added, serving as a refreshing summer snack.
043 tubasa no kaseki Secret Key Name translates to "Wing Fossil". Leftover from ITEMNAME.SAV.
045 dummy bomber Bike Voucher Leftover from ITEMNAME.SAV.
046 100p power X Accuracy Leftover from ITEMNAME.SAV.
047 reef pai Leaf Stone Name translates to "Leaf Pie". Another food-themed early stone name.
054 genki no moto Max Revive Name translates to "Life Source". Later changed to "Genki No Katamari" (Life Clump).
056 sinkirou no moto Super Repel Name translates to "Mirage Source". Completely different item.
057 prism coart Max Repel This item's name appears to be "Prism Quartz". Completely different item.
070 ma ru i ta ma Oak's Parcel Name translates to "Round Ball". Completely different item. Interestingly, in the final game, when giving the parcel to Oak, he will comment, that "This is the custom POKé BALL that I ordered!"

Badges and Ranks

The file BADGE.DMG elaborates on the previously unexplained badge and rank texts. At one point, there existed a system where winning badges would increase the player's "Monster Trainer Rank" (as defined in COMMON.DEF under "ASGN_RANK_NAME" and "MONS_RANK"). This whole system is downright ancient, as not only do most of these badges not match the final ones, but there's even nine of them, instead of just eight! Interestingly, the "Excellent" rank has a comment next to it, reading "...Ending After The Battle Win", but it's unclear if it's talking about the ranking system being "over", or the actual game itself. This ranking concept was ultimately shelved, though it may have later inspired the Trainer Card ranking system, which was introduced in Generation III.

In the Pokémon Yellow source, two April 2, 1998 comments by Murakawa explain that both tables are unassigned and can safely be deleted (though remnants of them still exist in the final games).

Internal Name Discrepancies

The file pokemon_map.txt contains a list of all the map scripts, alongside comments describing what location it is tied to. However, there are a few maps whose names don't match their in-game counterparts:

  • T04R07F01 - The map header for Cerulean Cave 1F is "Forgotten Cave 1F" (忘れられた洞窟1階). The other floors (D13R01F01 and D13R01F02), however, do use the final name, Cerulean Cave (ハナダの洞窟).
  • T07R01F03 - The third floor of the Celadon Department Store is simply labeled as "Nintendo Entertainment" (任天堂エンターテインメント), instead of "TV Game Shop" (テレビ ゲーム ショップ). This early name is also seen in i_msg2_7.dmg0.
  • T07R01F05 - The fifth floor of the Celadon Department Store is labeled as "Rocket Drugs" (ロケットドラッグ) instead of "Drug Store" (ドラッグ ストア). This floor sells "vitamins", so perhaps these items started off as illegal steroids/supplements. This early name is also seen in i_msg2_7.dmg0.
  • T07R02F05 - The house on the roof of the Celadon Mansion is labeled as "Grandpa's House" (お見通しじいさんの小屋). This is odd, as the NPC inside uses the buff man overworld sprite, suggesting that this character was changed at one point. This early name is also seen in i_msg2_2.dmg0 and i_msg2_7.dmg0, though the overworld sprite descriptor is correct, labeling the NPC as a "Macho Dude".
  • T11R04F01 - The house in Saffron City where a boy, a Pidgey, and a girl writing a letter all live is labeled as "Silph Co. House" (シルフの社宅). Perhaps this random generic house originally had some plot behind it? This early name is also seen in i_msg2_8.dmg0.
  • R20R01F01 - Seafoam Islands is called "Sea Cave (Articuno's Cave)" (海の洞窟(フリーザーのダンジョン)) instead of "Twin Islands" (ふたごじま). This is consistent from D16R01F01 through D16R01F04.
  • D12R01F06 - The Secret House in the Safari Zone is known as "Silph Chief's Hiding House" (シルフのチーフ潜伏小屋). This early name is also seen in i_msg2_1.dmg0, which on top of that also has a comment saying "Fishing Guru (Silph Chief)" (海の家主人(シルフのチーフ)).

The .dmg0 message files also have a small handful of interesting oddities unique to them:

  • In i_msg2_6.dmg0, the Nidoran♂ in Pewter City is labeled as a Growlithe (ガーディ). This may explain why this Pokémon barks when interacted with.
  • In i_msg2_1.dmg0, the Pokémon Center Nurse on the ninth floor of Silph Co. is referred to as a "Silph Worker♀" (シルフ女性社員).
  • In i_msg2_5.dmg0, Daisy is referred to as a "Fashionable Woman" (おしゃれな女性), which is the name given to Beauties. This makes sense, as her unique overworld sprite was a relatively late addition. Worth noting is that Daisy's Japanese name, "Nanami" (ナナミ), is used in the dialogue files. However, it refers to two different characters: the girl on Route 16 who hands out HM02, and the girl in Lavender Town who talks about Cubone's mother. This is because both use the "ponytail girl" overworld sprite, which is called "Nanami" internally. Nanami is a very generic Japanese girl name, so it's unclear if Daisy started off as a "ponytail girl" (and then a Beauty), or if she only later took that name.
