Development:PaRappa the Rapper (PlayStation)
This page details development materials of PaRappa the Rapper (PlayStation).
Internal Videos
Throughout the development of PaRappa the Rapper, series co-creator Rodney Greenblat was sent videocassettes by Masaya Matsuura's team showing the progress made on the game's FMVs, character models, art style, and gameplay. These videos were later digitized by Reel Revival Films and uploaded to Greenblat's YouTube channel in Spring 2022.
Test Opening Animation 1995
Dated about Christmas 1995, with holiday wishes to Greenblat by Matsuura, this would be the very first test of the animation he saw for the opening movie. In place of PaRappa is a test character, because they were still finalizing his main character design at the time. All voices heard were done by Ryu Watabe, the game's lyricist.
As noted by the Engrish text at the very end, it was captured from an AV Macintosh rather than a PlayStation.
Opening + Stage 1 Pre-Final 1995
Greenblat's first exposure to the completed version of the opening movie and first level, complete with his "Jet Baby" song, was this VHS tape sent to him sometime in 1995 (as noted on the video title). If the year is accurate, that would mean that at least the opening and first stage were finished long before the game's completion on September 27, 1996 (according to the game's executable).
