Dead or Alive 2 features an in-depth fighting game engine, intense tag battles, breakable multi-tiered stages... and, of course, a rather jiggly physics engine.

Regional Differences

There are a number of differences for each region of the game's release. Because the series was also being ported to PS2 at the time, Team Ninja continued to add and share content between versions for each new release.

USA Release

The Dreamcast port was first released in North America on February 29, 2000. It was based on the NAOMI arcade "Millennium update" version, but added Versus and Sparring modes, as well as Team Battle Mode. There are no unlockables in the US release. There are 33 costumes spread across all characters in this version.

Intro Movie

Somewhat famously, the original intro for DOA2 featured a "cloning" scene where a nude Kasumi floats in a blob of yellow jelly. This is usually hidden; however, it can be unlocked. Set the "age" in Options to at least 21, then achieve a top-10 score in Survival. Enter your name as "REALDEMO". This will replace the cutscene of Tengu in the church tower to the uncensored version during the intro.

European Release

The European Dreamcast version was released on July 14, 2000. This version included the costumes from the first Japanese PlayStation 2 version, bringing the total to 48. No new stages were added in this release. The list of new costumes added are:

Japan Release

The Japanese Dreamcast version (also known as the Limited Edition) was released on September 28, 2000. The only difference between the JP "standard" and "limited" editions was a different cover art: LE featured only Kasumi and Ayane, while the standard version was different and showed Kasumi, Ayane and Leifang.

Two new characters were added in the Japanese release: Tengu ("Bankotsubo") and Bayman were now unlockable, playable in all but Story Mode. The new stages from the PlayStation 2 version were not included, however new versions of two stages from the original Dead or Alive were introduced. This version also added Sparring mode for Tag Battle, Watch Mode, the User Profile System, online play, more costumes to unlock, and a Gallery Mode with character renders. In total, 71 costumes are available in this version.

Cinematic Changes (Story Mode):

• The battle between Lei Fang and Tina always takes place in L's Castle.
• The US Dreamcast version does not have story matches or cinemas for Gen-Fu vs. Leon, Helena vs. Gen-Fu, Zack vs. Bass, and Jann-Lee vs. Hayabusa. These were all added in JP release, with corresponding stage selections.
• Added a cinema of Jann-Lee extinguishing the candles.

Miscellaneous Changes

• Kasumi's default hairstyle was changed from a low braid to a high ponytail.
• Default intro movie is now always the uncensored version.
• Additional tag team moves.

Bonus Folder

Inserting the CD-ROM in a PC reveals a computer-readable segment containing a folder called "BONUS". Inside are 1280×960 wallpaper images for the female characters in the game.

The EU gallery has five images, the US version adds an additional three.
