Command & Conquer: Generals/Unused Content in the Original/Missions and Maps

This is a sub-page of Command & Conquer: Generals/Unused Content in the Original.

The various missions and maps that are included with the game are another part featuring lots of unused stuff.

First of all, due to the way the map editor works, the map previews that can be seen in multiplayer are generated for all maps. This includes maps that cannot be selected in multiplayer, including the mission maps, the shell map (that plays on the title screen), and in the expansion pack the Generals Challenge maps and even the debug maps.

Second, in the original game, the mission maps were created when the old generals system of the prototype still existed. Therefore, the factions that appear in the mission are still titled teamChinaSecretPolice, teamGLAWarlordCommand, et cetera. Some maps also try to disable units which no longer exist in the game, such as the missile team.

Originally, all factions had eight missions per campaign. One was cut from each campaign for some reason.

Multiplayer

Some unused and unfinished multiplayer maps can be found within the files.

Bridge Busters

Map Preview

Bridge Busters is an unfinished 1v1 multiplayer map. It doesn't show up in the map list due to incorrect waypoint names that handle player starting positions.

However even if it did, the AI would not function properly because of waypoints placed outside the playable area, which is smaller than the actual map size. This, combined with the fact that the waypoints are placed outside the area and going through the map's geometry suggests the map looked different at one point.

More than likely the map later evolved into Sand Serpent, since the latter is almost identical in layout.

SwissMP

Map Preview

Another unfinished multiplayer map that doesn't show up for the same reason as Bridge Busters. There are only two starting positions but its layout suggests it was meant to be a three player map, it would've been one of its only kind.

The AI functions as expected if the map is loaded into the game.

Woodcrest Circle

Map Preview

Woodcrest Circle is another cut 1v1 map. While the first two maps don't show up in the list due to having misnamed starting positions, this one doesn't have any at all. For the final game, it seems the map simply became Final Crusade with some subtle differences, the most obvious of which is the river. While animated to flow in Final Crusade, in Woodcrest Circle it's not. It's also connected to a large lake, whereas in Final Crusade it flows outside map boundaries.

Map Preview

A mysterious, cinematic-only map whose purpose cannot be ascertained. It's certainly not a cut mission but possibly a map made for promotional media, probably to demonstrate the game's capabilities. The map is set in a European-styled environment with a small town. Despite clearly being a cinematic, the camera controls are not locked, and the control bar is not hidden. Other than that and some missing car objects, the map works perfectly.

The map shows a column of five Crusader tanks escorted by two teams of Rangers covering both sides. Two Chinese Migs fly in to fire their missiles on a squad of Rebels atop a small hill. Shortly after, two Buggies and some Rebels attack the marching Rangers, who don't retaliate, although the Crusaders do. The American army then reaches the outskirts of a town whose main road is blocked by two other Buggies, some barrels and cars. Two Technicals drive in to help the Buggies. All resistance is made short work of by the Crusaders. All the while, a Comanche flies twice over the town. As the army enters, the Rangers are separated as they go through the town's flanks. The camera later pans to a church. One of the Rangers tries to enter but for some reason, he abruptly dies with no explanation. The cinematic stops here, but the mission does not end.

The map is also available in the files of Build 98 Alpha, with some tiny differences. Instead of five Crusader Tanks, there are four missing tanks units with the ID of AmericaTankLeopard, one Crusader and one Dozer.

The video to the right, with slight adjustments, shows how the cinematic would play out in-game.
