Region Differences for Sega Saturn Port

Hello,

Recently I got a Sega Saturn, and since Sega Rally is one of my favorite arcade games, I got both the American and Japanese versions of the game. I heard there were some differences between the two, however there was nothing specific documented online.

Just by casually playing the two versions I was able to notice some differences, but unfortunately I lack the ability to dig into Saturn games + don't really have a good way of capturing these differences myself. The Japanese version released a bit later than the American one, and some of the changes seem to be in line with, say, a newer patch version of the game.

Here are some version differences I noticed just from playing casually. If somebody with more technical knowledge could help out with this, I would be happy to help out any way I can.

  • Unsurprisingly, the Japanese version has Japanese text and uses Km/H, while the American one is exclusively English text and uses MPH
  • People have mentioned online that the car models have been updated in the Japanese version. I can't tell any major differences in the models themselves, however I noticed for the texture used for the Celica, the American version is missing the Toyota badge on the back, while it's been added in the Japanese version
  • The road texture for the second course, Mountain, seems to be a slightly different shade of blue in the Japanese version.
  • Beginning with the second track in the Championship mode, you can see the timer get seconds added to it with a pinging sound effect in the Japanese version, much like in the arcade original. The American version lacks this.
  • While ripping both CD's audio tracks, I noticed the order of the music tracks is different. My guess is that they rearranged it so the order makes more sense when you play the music in a CD player. With the American version, the first few tracks are the songs that play when you watch a replay, in the Japanese version these have been moved down and the first track is the one that plays during the attract mode.
  • A minor controller annoyance has been fixed. In the American version, as the camera pans down for your first race, you cannot shift out of neutral or change the camera position until the camera zooms into your car. In the Japanese version, they changed this so you can shift into gear while the camera zooms, and if you press the camera button, it will snap to the third-person view after it finishes the zoom animation into your car.

There's likely other differences abound, but I think that would require someone with technical knowledge of the Saturn. Please get in touch if you think you can help!
