So very stubbly.
This page is rather stubbly and could use some expansion.
Are you a bad enough dude to rescue this article?

Borderlands is essentially Mad Max: The Video Game - a fun FPS with elements of Diablo throughout and nice DLC with great multiplayer. The game has an arguably more enjoyable (and less cerebral) sequel, released three years later.

Hmmm...
To do:
  • Rip the audio as ogg files!
  • Unused "grenade launcher" weapon parts.
  • Unused weapon parts in general.
  • Cut weapons (there's a cut weapon or two in the game).
  • There's a crap ton of unused voice clips for Mad Moxxi in the Underdome DLC, including hints at unused rules, stages, and bosses.
  • There is unused textures from the early versions of Borderlands. Some of them include the original concept for the main characters and a very early design of a SMG.
  • Some unused objects such as an untextured stairwell.
  • According to YouTube user TheXPSGamer, after speaking to a Gearbox developer, there's a song that was originally used in an Easter Egg in which a Borderlands character, Tannis, rode a fish around as a concert played in the background. The Easter Egg remained intact, however, the song was replaced mid-development.

Unused Weapons

"Grenade Launcher" Weapon Type

Originally, Borderlands was supposed to feature Grenade Launchers. While the "Grenade Launcher" weapon type was scrapped completely in the final game, it is still possible to create your own working Grenade Launcher weapons using a save-editing program such as WillowTree.

One of the first bosses you encounter near Fyrestone, Nine-Toes, was originally supposed to have his own special Grenade Launcher known as "The Big Toe". The Big Toe is fully creatable in-game.

Various Grenade Launcher weapon parts still exist and as mentioned above are completely usable. Here is an example of the code used to recreate The Big Toe grenade launcher in WillowTree.

As mentioned above, Grenade Launchers can be recreated via modding, which is easily done with a modding program like WillowTree. Grenade Launcher parts can be found in WillowTree in the "gd_weap_grenade_launcher" section. The complete list of Grenade Launcher parts is as follows:

Oasis

"Oasis" is an unused map from the base game. Despite the fact that the map doesn't exist in the game, its existence is known because of the various remaining references in the game's files. It is interesting to note that its Fast Travel Station Postcard looks different from all of the others in the game.

"Dividing Faults" Testing Area

In "Dividing Faults" (a map from "Claptrap's New Robot Revolution" DLC) a small square platform can be found out-of-bounds with all containers from the base game. This area cannot be reached normally and can be seen in the top-right corner of the top view picture below.

"Greenfields" Trailer

Found in custom_greenfields.upk is an unused trailer featuring the song "Greenfields" by the Brothers Four. Some differences include an early Lilith model, as well as the town of "Fyrestone" being spelled with a "i."

Early Guardian Angel Footage

Found in intro_assets.upk are some early clips highlighting the development stages of the footage that would eventually become the "Guardian Angel" in-game.

"The Destroyer" Placeholder Video

vb_comp.bik

A placeholder video called vb_comp.bik can be found in the Movies folder. When played, the video only contains a single static image. In the game, all videos with the word "comp" in their name stand for character introduction suggesting this could have been "The Destroyer" introduction video with "vb" standing for "Vault Boss". This appeared to be true when the remaster came out as the video got replaced with an introduction for "The Destroyer" boss battle.

Unused Sounds

Early Sound Clips

There are several unused sound clips that feature the early voices of characters such as Marcus, Tannis, T.K. Baha, Scooter, Helena, and several others.
