This is a sub-page of A Hat in Time (Windows, Mac OS X).

This game has received quite a few patches, and has changed a lot since release. The most noticeable differences will be documented here.

An update to A Hat in Time has been released. The update will be applied automatically when you restart A Hat in Time. This is a minor update. The changes include:

We have an opt-in beta available called the "Modding Support BETA". It is a BETA. It will be broken. Don't opt in unless you're ready to accept that things will be broken, and that it will be updated frequently. It's a test ground for us to test all the various crazy mods that modders will make, and fix those before Modding Support gets merged with the main game.

Us at Gears for Breakfast take great pride in the fact that we're able to respond to issues quickly. When someone reports a bug, we often have a fix for it ready to ship in less than a day.
However, we did not take into account the fact that a lot of people are on limited bandwidth. Receiving a 2.6gb update multiple times a week can be frustrating when in that scenario. We realize this now, and going forward we will reduce the frequency at which we update, and instead bundle our fixes into major releases instead (or supply the fixes via the Modding Support BETA). The only exception to this will be necessary hotfixes for severe issues. Thank you for voicing your thoughts to us so we can continue to improve the game and our distribution of the game!

December 11 Debug Build

By this build, a secret location in Alpine Skyline had been changed dramatically. At the Goat Outpost Horn, there's a hidden area housing a Brewing Yarn collectible inside of a makeshift wooden birdhouse. In the initial release of the game, this structure was actually constructed out of BSP instead of static meshes, and the method of accessing the collectible was by hooking onto a floating Subcon Noose. By December of 2017, this structure was remade with static meshes, and the way to access the secret was changed to a springboard. The house's wood textures also changed, becoming a much brighter shade of brown. Two little planks of wood on the new version are still leftover from the BSP version, however.

Another notable change that occurred by this build was the overhaul of the lit cherry bomb material effect. When the final game launched, the cherry bomb effect much more closely resembled the Beta's appearance, with it flashing red when lit. By December of 2017, that effect was replaced with a much more dynamic effect, showing a peach-colored pulsing effect on the cherry instead. The material for it still have nodes for the old flashing effect inside, however, but they are disconnected.

January 6 Modding Beta

Early Spaceship Death Wish Music

Found in the files of Modding Beta builds between January 6 2018 and January 9 2018 is an early version of the music that plays in the spaceship when near Snatcher:

This version is less than half the length of the finished version, falling very short of the length to match other spaceship variants. To an untrained ear, the early version may sound the same as the final, but it's actually slightly different. The early version was imported on January 3 2018, while the final version was imported late on January 9 2018. This version was actually used for a secret on the A Hat in Time website, where clicking on a certain part of the page would lead to a page with Snatcher smiling over an image of the Death Wish map while playing this music.


February 8 2018

We're happy to release an all-new B-Side Soundtrack for A Hat in Time, featuring 80+ tracks of all-new remixes, wip & lost tracks, as well as extended tracks.

Upon purchase of the B-Side Soundtrack, if the tracks aren't appearing for you, or the track list is appearing incomplete, please restart Steam to receive the latest update that the B-Side Soundtrack arrives with.

In addition, an update to A Hat in Time has been released. The update will be applied automatically when you restart A Hat in Time. This is a major update. The changes include:

Added support for rebindable buttons on controller
You can now add support for any controller under the "input" menu.
Added a new lighting model that significantly improves the visual fidelity of certain surfaces in A Hat in Time (in particular metal).

Notes

This build is the first main branch build to add PBR, a new type of metal shader backported from Unreal Engine 4. PBR would become heavily used in The Arctic Cruise and Nyakuza Metro later on in development. Prior to this update, PBR was much shinier, as can be seen in the screenshot below, which is from January 2018.

Gears for Breakfast is pleased to announce a free update to A Hat in Time: The Modding Update!

We love mods. Ever since releasing A Hat in Time, we've seen our modding community achieve fantastic feats, such as all-new chapters, hats, badges, and more. To celebrate, we're releasing our first major Windows A Hat in Time update: The Modding Update. In addition, A Hat in Time is going on sale for 24 hours at -33% off on Steam!

This update is available RIGHT NOW on Steam and later next week on GoG.

This update brings our mod support out of beta, and natively integrates mods into the game loop: By playing mods and completing mod levels, you receive Rift Tokens which can be used to purchase new hat flairs, remixes, and more! In addition, we've also added new flairs to the game.

We're also happy to announce that we're officially including 2 community-made A Hat in Time mods into the main game:

March 22 2018 Modding Beta

Early Rift Collapse Combined Music

Also later found in the Deep Sea Rift in the May 28 2018 DLC 1 Leak Build is an earlier version of the Rift Collapse music used in the final game.

March 10 2018 July 31 2018

The two versions are identical in composition except that the final's was made to loop more within the track, to prevent it from awkwardly looping in the final game. It worked at first, but nerfs to the Rift Collapse timer speed in Peace and Tranquility would cause the song to no longer be long enough for the death clock, allowing the player to hear its jarring loop in-game.


March 23 2018

An update to A Hat in Time has been released. The update will be applied automatically when you restart A Hat in Time. This is a minor update containing patches and hotfixes. The changes include:

Added Korean fan-translation by Fluffy Kittie (they have been compensated and credited for their work)
Minor visual improvements to the loadout menu
Made the wall jump in She Came From Outer Space's platforming segment easier
Time Stop now has an extra cooldown when the player uses it to strike a boss

Camera calculations have been optimized significantly, providing a performance boost on the CPU
Minor performance improvements to rendering, providing a minor performance boost on the CPU
Fixed a bug where flairs would appear incorrectly in certain cutscenes

Fixed balloons appearing bright in night time version of Mafia Town
Fixed collision in a few spots in Murder on the Owl Express

Notes

The summit of the Tower of the Goats gained some Pons and additional details by this build. The newly-added Pons and purple decals at the base of the spinners were added to help uncertain players figure out what they're supposed to do when reaching the top of the tower, as some players reportedly had trouble spotting the spinners.

Fixed a race-condition crash in audio playback
The Relic Finder Badge has been replaced by the Compass Badge, which serves a similar purpose but is used differently.
Compass Badge now costs 400 pons instead of the previous 100.
Mafia Town at night has been improved visually with rain effects and localized fog
This has also been applied to the Alpine Skyline Purple Time Rift
Hat Kid now has an effect for being in water
Minor performance improvements to rendering
Snatcher's blink attack now has an audio cue to signify its importance
Fixed water in Mafia Town sometimes freaking out
Fixed a rendering bug where some objects would become invisible
Fixed the PS4 button icon saying "CIRCLE"


Note: Any community-made levels containing torches or chairs will need to be re-cooked

Notes

This build, as mentioned in the changelog for it, completely overhauled the Relic Finder Badge into the Compass Badge. Thus, all of the original and unique graphics made for the HUD for the Relic Finder Badge went unused in this build. A full HUD Element previously appeared in the bottom right corner of the screen, using the same map graphic from the unused Sand Travel Map HUD.

Its own unique graphics:


When the map would detect a relic, it'll place a pin for it on the map and try to direct Hat Kid towards it with different arrows.

Prior to DLC 1's release, a couple decals in Subcon Forest had a pulsing effect. For whatever reason, the nodes in their parent material that handle the pulsing effect were disconnected.

Several background mountains in Alpine Skyline lost collision, which resulted in numerous decals that were plastered onto them not showing up in-game anymore. The mountains that lost decals were the ones along the path to Yellow Band Hills, Serpentine Bird Horn, and The Windmill, respectively. There were also two Goat NPCs on a mountain along the path to Yellow Band Hills that started constantly falling into the void, despawning before the player could ever see them. Thankfully, an update to the game in 2021 fixed the Goats falling to their deaths and restored the mountains missing their decals near Yellow Band Hills. The other mountains are still missing their decals in the current final game.

Notes

The aurora borealis in Alpine Skyline disappeared by this build due to culling distances being tightened up. An update in 2021 that also fixed some mountains missing collision made the aurora borealis visible again, thankfully.


Only present in this build of the game is an early version of the metro's hub room on the Spaceship. It can be found floating off away from the main area, much like the DLC 1 room. The room's design in-game appears as a black box with some wires near the top. There's also some flat plane models that use the default texture. Also present in the level is two cubemaps for the room, which show a much more completed room design than the one that appears in-game. This is because the room uses assets from Nyakuza Metro, which are prevented from being cooked in due to anti-leak measures deployed by Gears For Breakfast. This early version of the room was present in the game from this build until the release of DLC 2, meaning it stuck around for several months.

The two cubemaps for the room, showing its design more resembled Empress's jewelry shop interior than a unique station with benches and a cat trains running through it. The DLC 1 elevator is used as placeholder for accessing the room. There is a trigger volume inside of the elevator in the room, but touching it does nothing.

The text also depicts an early way the Metro Cats once spoke, often ending sentences with "nya". No Metro Cats speak this way in the final version at all.

Two localization files for Empress, one of which (empress_metro.int) does not exist in the final version. The contents of both files is the same: early dialogue for Rush Hour. At this point in development, there were only four Time Pieces to collect in the level prior to the finale, instead of eight. The manholes for the level were found to exist as early as December 2018, indicating that all of this localization is leftover from sometime before December 2018, but after September 29 2018. It also appears that Hat Kid would've stolen them back one by one during the level, instead of snatching them all up at once before the Act began.

A Hat in Time's 5th Anniversary
We're celebrating A Hat in Time's 5th anniversary! A limited-time event will take place starting tomorrow
(October 4th) and ending October 9th!

During the event, the Spaceship will be decorated!
We'll be having a casual developer anniversary party on October 5th at 7pm CET with a livestream on Twitch.tv (Twitch.tv/GearsForBreakfastOfficial)

The A Hat in Time Steam Summer Event starts June 29, 2023, and ends July 13, 2023!

Summer Event
A brand-new in-game summer event is live from June 29th to July 31st!
The spaceship has been decorated for summer vibes
A new summer Death Wish map with 50 stamps is available, containing community-made challenges (accessible via Death Wish in the Pause Menu)
The challenges and rewards are available even if you don't own 'A Hat in Time: Seal the Deal'
Unlock 2 new weapons, a new sticker and a new dye

Reduced requirement for the Cave Story summer Death Wish objective from 5,000 EXP to 1,000 EXP
Updated objective for UFO summer Death Wish, since it required a one-time Rift Token to clear

New Feature: Emblems

    Added emblems to acts in the act select screen. Emblems are rewarded for: 0 jumps, speedrun, all rift token pages, all yarn, all rift pons, finding friend message, finding developer message.



Gameplay

    Brewing Hat breakables now spawn health if the player is missing health
    The Completionist's Hat now highlights pons that have been collected before
    Added "Prevent Accidental Falls" input setting, which prevents rare cases where Hat Kid may vault over a ledge to her death




Levels

    Fixed invisible sign meshes in The Illness Has Spread near the birdhouse
    Fixed pause menu not highlighting the correct Time Piece when in a Time Rift
    Ship Shape delivery guides now only refresh if the player strays far away from them

    Online Party join messages now close after a few seconds of being accepted. This fixes a softlock if the joined level is not installed.
