This article is a work in progress.
...Well, all the articles here are, in a way. But this one moreso, and the article may contain incomplete information and editor's notes.
So very stubbly.
This page is rather stubbly and could use some expansion.

After the release of Slap City in 2018, Ludosity CEO Joel Nyström got an email from Nickelodeon.

"At first I didn't think it was for real. You get a lot of weird emails and deals on a weekly basis, so at first I dismissed it as spam!"[1]

After realizing that it wasn't spam, Nickelodeon and Ludosity began having talks and laid out their plans for an all-new platform fighter.

Concept Art

Preliminary Concept Art

Artist Christopher Near shared some production art made to help pitch the game on his Instagram and personal website. While it doesn't hint at any characters they were going to add, it nonetheless is a glimpse of what potential the game's roster could have when pitching the game to Nickelodeon. There are even characters in the art not seen at all in the final game, including:

  • Angelica, from Rugrats.
  • Casey Jones from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
  • Jimmy Neutron from Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius.
  • Krumm from Aaahh!! Real Monsters
  • Raphael from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
  • Reggie from Rocket Power.
  • Wanda from The Fairly OddParents

Jimmy Neutron and Raphael would eventually be added to the game's sequel, Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2.

Additionally, Wanda and Reggie being present is particularly interesting as their franchises ultimately went unrepresented in the final game.

Ren and Stimpy Moveset Concept Art

Joel Nyström revealed concept art for a handful of Ren and Stimpy's attacks in their reveal post on the PlayStation Blog. Each of these showcase different expressions and poses compared to what they would look like in the final game.

In-progress versions of the game's key art have surfaced, with the most major difference being the game's title being "Nickelodeon Brawl All-Stars".

Fighter Reveal Teaser

On August 24, 2021, GameMill uploaded a video teasing that two new characters would be added to the roster. At 0:38 in the trailer, early models for Sandy and Leonardo can be seen very briefly. Leonardo's design is quite different in his mask and belt, while Sandy's model is simply unpolished.

The inclusion of these models in this trailer is very unusual, as these characters had models that were more finalized in the initial announcement trailer.

Early Character Renders

There are lots of early character renders that were used heavily in the game's marketing, but ended up being changed by the game's full release. Some of these renders are newer versions of existing ones, some are completely different.

Danny Phantom

Prerelease Final
He's a phantom. His molecules got all rearranged!

Danny Phantom's old render had a blue glow and was in very different lighting. In the retail release, these effects were removed and the lighting was changed, with addition to shading around the eyes. The early render can be seen on the game's Twitter account and official website, as well as Danny's showcase video on GameMill's official YouTube channel.

Leonardo

Prerelease Final
My name is Leonardo. My brothers look up to me for leadership. Go ninja!

Leonardo's head was reposed to face more downward at the viewer. His right arm is also bulkier.

Michelangelo

Prerelease Final
Dude, I could be gaming! Pizza time!

Michelangelo was reposed to stand more upright, and his pupils are slightly larger.

April O'Neil

Earliest Early Final
Thumbs up! On the air! Gee, thanks!

April's render was completely different when she was first confirmed to be part of the roster. Her pose shows her giving a thumbs up with a different facial expression, as well as a different background made up of a brick pattern. This render was revealed on the game's Twitter account and was later updated soon after it was posted. In the final game, April was given a minor facelift and the lighting on her render is overall different.

Korra

Unused Final
Deal with it. Oh, now you've done it.

Korra's render was drastically different upon her being announced for the game. Her pose, expression, and background were all overhauled within several days after this was posted. Interestingly, the background can still be seen on the game's official website, albeit with Korra's then new alternate color.

Lincoln Loud

Unused Final (In-Game Recreation)
Grody! Morning, ladies!

Lincoln's render had a completely different background and featured a slightly different model with unique posing and lighting. Additional detail and general fixes to the model would only be fixed by the game's final release. This early render and background can still be seen on the game's official website. Oddly, background would be updated for Lincoln's official gameplay overview on GameMill's YouTube channel, but the render itself would not.

Post-Release

Early Garfield Alternate Costume

An early version of Garfield's alternate costume can be seen in a tweet on the official Twitter account. The bib in this iteration is white with food stains all over it, while the final would stick to a red and white checker design.[3]

Unused Final
Ew, gross. Mondays, am I right?

Unused Items

Although intended to be there at launch, items were officially added in an update on June 6, 2022. However, three of them didn't make the cut: the Blimp, Treehouse Platform, and Stink Cloud. The game's art director at Fair Play Labs, Diego Hernández, revealed these cut items in a tweet made two days after the update went live.

While it's not clear how exactly the Blimp and Stink Cloud would have functioned, the Treehouse Platform would have spawned a platform when thrown while doing damage on impact, functioning similarly to Toph's platforms. These items were cut from the game because the team didn't find them all that fun.

Curiously, the renders for these cut items were accidentally pushed in an update that released with the Jenny Wakeman DLC on May 13, 2022. They were subsequently removed in the next update on June 6.
