Sonic Robo Blast 2 initially began its roots as a TGF game, similar to it's predecessor.

Development Timeline

1998

  • March - Development on Sonic Robo Blast 2 begins, around a month after Sonic Robo Blast 1 is completed.
  • May - Sonic Team Junior is formed.
  • July - It is concluded (after many issues) that TGF (The Games Factory) was not powerful enough to continue the project. Stealth would offer to make the game in C, and begun doing so.
  • August-September - Stealth goes AWOL, and both SSNTails and Sonikku no longer have a solid development plan. SSNTails looks to his then work-in-progress mod for DOOM, called Sonic Doom 2: Bots on Mobius. He convenes with Sonikku, and they both agree that they should use the DOOM engine, and development begins anew as a DOOM mod.
  • December - The earliest levels are made.
  • December 24th - Sonic Christmas Blast is released.

1999

  • March - A build of the game is mentioned on the alt.fan.sonic-hedgehog USENET newsgroup.
  • September - The duo decide that source modification would be a good idea, and so, they start work using the DOOM Legacy source code as a base.
  • October 31st - The first release of SRB2 comes in the form of a Halloween tech demo (as it was named at the time).
  • December 24th - The Christmas demo is first released (v0.90), with many major issues.

2000

  • February 24th - Christmas demo v0.92 is released.
  • March 24th - Christmas demo v0.93 is released, with a work-in-progress version of Greenflower Zone Act 1.
  • April 24th - Christmas demo v0.94 is released.
  • September - The first ever SAGE (Sonic Amateur Games Expo) takes place, with Sonic Team Junior having a booth resembling their website. A video is released during the expo. Christmas demo v0.96 is also released as a limited edition CD.
  • November 11-13th - Demo 1 is released.
  • December - A preview video for Demo 2 is released.

2001

  • March - SAGE 2 takes place, and Sonic Team Junior, again, have a booth. The booth is actually the SRB2.org website.
