Sonic Colors for the Nintendo DS contains the same story and planets as the Wii version, but with sidescrolling gameplay, different bosses, two different wisps and special appearances from Sonic & Tails' friends. This is notably the last Sonic game developed by Dimps/to feature online for a Sonic game by Dimps during the Nintendo DS era, and the first Sonic game developed by Dimps to be tie-in for a console title.

While the "Colors" name was retained in North America and Japan for the DS version's title screen, the European/Australian version of the title screen alters it to add the "Colours" variation of the name used in those regions.
