This page details one or more prototype versions of Rat Attack (PlayStation).

Hmmm...
To do:
The game's manual has screenshots of the game that show an earlier version of the game with some minor touches. Should they be documented here?

Official PlayStation Magazine Demo disc 49 (and a couple of other European demo discs) contained a demo of Rat Attack. The demo included the levels Leisure Lounge, Kitchen Kapers, Rifle Range, The Pit, and Beefy Bennett, while playable characters consisted of Hai Jinx, Sparky and Manx.

Menu Differences

The title screen more closely resembles that of the Nintendo 64 version of the game, and lacks Newton floating around.

Minor changes. DuPont, Smokey and Bob Cat have had their icons removed (though strangely, Banubis and Pearl's icons are still present). Everything is more spaced out in the demo. As a minor difference, if selecting a character is not available (ie. by hacking), exiting and re-entering does not correct the icon selector.

The model shown is a lot smaller, and the arrows have been removed, likely because they were redundant. In the retail version, the arrows are present even if you can't actually move left or right. The text for them is still in the corner, though.

Level Differences

In Kitchen Kapers, there's a faucet/tap which is removed in the retail version for some reason. Several of the objects were also moved around.

RatAttackDemo-RR.png RatAttack-CS.png

In Rifle Range, there's a toxic platform in the demo. In the final, this was removed and replaced with another target, making the level a little easier. The breakable objects have also been moved a little bit.

Other Differences

The main HUD is solid in the demo, but in the retail version, most of it has transparency. The cat's health icon (the little green cat) is smaller in the demo.

The HUD has also been moved up a little in the final, and the score is moved a little over to the bottom right.

Unused Characters

Despite not being selectable, all of the Scratch Cats found in the retail version are in the game. They function perfectly, although Banubis and Pearl have switched order number (even though the icons haven't).

Unused Text

There are a few bits of text that aren't present in the final game.

Other Level Changes

  • In the final, there are two level entries for Scarab's Palace, but only one in the demo.
  • Two name changes are also present - Ghostly Graveyard was known as Ghoulish Graveyard, and Ghosthouse Ghoulies went on to become Ghostly Ghoulies.
  • A level intended for the Space world was removed in the final completely - Computer Chaos.

Other

In the text order, Banubis and Pearl's names are switched around, suggesting that, once upon a time, Banubis was the last Scratch Cat you could unlock.
