This page details pre-release information and/or media for Super Mario Odyssey.

So very stubbly.
This page is rather stubbly and could use some expansion.
Are you a bad enough dude to rescue this article?
Hmmm...
To do:

Super Mario Odyssey was one of the first Nintendo Switch games revealed albeit it was unnamed for several months. Unlike other 3D Mario games which changed drastically, Super Mario Odyssey only went through slight changes in its pre-release stage, or at least the game did in public appearances.

Development Timeline

  • The trailer theme is an unorchestrated and shorter version of the staff roll theme which itself is a remix of the Cascade Kingdom theme.
  • Steam Gardens was originally called "Kogwald" (German for "cog forest") as seen in a billboard in New Donk City.
  • The textures for the intro were simpler and less detailed.

There was a playable demo at the first E3 open to the public. A Debug Menu was briefly shown in the E3 2017 demo via late pictures. While sead::TextWriter which is what was used to display this Debug Menu is still in versions 1.0-1.2 of the game, the menu itself is not.

The Art of Super Mario Odyssey

In the Art of Super Mario Odyssey book, there are numerous pieces of concept art showing unused costumes for characters, early kingdom designs and design revisions for various characters and enemies featured in the game. Some of these include:

  • Early versions of the New Donk City area, with different art styles to the final game. For instance, one version has a more cartoony look with NPCs resembling Mario and Luigi, whereas another is more anime esque, with NPCs similar to those in the Professor Layton series.
  • A picture of Rosalina dressed as a musician, indicating she was originally meant to have a role in this game.[2]
  • Bowser wearing a trenchcoat, which could be taken to imply he was meant to wear costumes themed around each of the game's kingdoms when encountered there (like Princess Peach in the postgame).
  • Doki Doki Panic was also going to be referenced at one point too, with early Sand Kingdom/Tostarena concepts showing arabian style NPCs, camels, snake charmers and Gao type Sphinx creatures instead of the Mexican esque ones in the final game.[3]
  • Cats made an appearance in New Donk City as NPCs.
  • Cappy went through numerous redesigns in the game's development, with early concepts showing him as everything from a Dragon Quest style slime with a witch's hat to a penguin like creature in a bowler hat.
  • The Ruined Dragon was meant to be an Eastern styled dragon at one point, with early designs showing him resembling Chinese dragons and even a humanoid god like being.
  • Bowser also had a flying car at one point, which resembled the Bowser Mobile from Super Mario 3D World.
  • Art for Toad Town can also be seen in the book, along with human tourists visiting the Mushroom Kingdom.
  • And the Cloud Kingdom was also significantly different earlier in development, with concept art depicting it as a mountainous region and palace built out of clouds rather than the arena found in the final game.

On page 82, a concept for the moon get scene is shown. In this, we can see an illustration of a much different UI.

On page 326, a test stage is seen with an early version of the aviator outfit.
