General Overview
Inspired by his childhood fear of animatronics from the golden era of pizza-places in the 1980's and the negative reception of his previous project, Scott Cawthon developed Five Nights at Freddy's over the course of six months. Production commenced in January 2014.
Plans were made for the game to be funded on Kickstarter beginning on June 14th, 2014, however no money was raised at all, and thus the crowdfunding campaign was cancelled three days after conception. Rewards planned for the Kickstarter included the following:
- Anyone who pledged $10 or more would earn a wallpaper pack, featuring five desktop wallpapers in total.
- Anyone who pledged $25 or more would receive an early-access beta of the full game, alongside the aforementioned wallpaper pack.
- Anyone who pledged $50 or more would become a beta-tester for the game, and would receive test demos on a weekly basis.
A two-night demo for the game would release on July 25th of the same year. The full game would release on August 8th, 2014, and was then successfully approved on Steam Greenlight on August 13th, 2014, leading to a Steam release on August 18th, 2014.
On June 14th, 2014, a teaser trailer for the game was released by Scott Cawthon. This trailer contains very little gameplay and is mostly comprised of cinematics.

Scare Montages #1 & #2
Shortly after the release of the game on Steam, Scott Cawthon uploaded two montages showcasing YouTubers' reactions to getting jumpscared. These were removed from the official Steam page a few years later, but are still accessible on the Internet Archive here.
