Field Calls

Time

English Spanish French Japanese
MSSTimeGraphic.png MSSTimeGraphicSpanish.png MSSTimeGraphicFrench.png SMSMBTimeGraphic1.pngSMSMBTimeGraphic2.pngSMSMBTimeGraphic3.png

Found grouped with the other field calls is an unused "Time" graphic, in English, Spanish, French and Japanese. Mario Superstar Baseball had a time graphic for pausing the game, but it goes unused here.

Compared to the other field calls, the English, Spanish, and French versions of this graphic are lowercase, instead of being uppercase.

Hit

MSSUnusedHitCallGraphic.png

An unused field call that translates to "Hit", found in the HUD graphics used for Toy Field.

Mario Sunshines Team

MSSMarioSunshinesTeamIcon.pngMSSMarioSunshinesTeamLogo.png

Found with the field call graphics are the team logo and icon for the Mario Sunshines. These are leftovers from Mario Superstar Baseball, as Mario's team name was changed to the Mario Fireballs in Mario Super Sluggers.

Japanese American
SMSFBPauseMenuX2.png MSSPauseMenuX2.png

A graphic of text reading x2. The American version of this graphic is grayed out, and has 非使用 written over it, which translates to "Not Used".

A duplicate of the icon used to save in Challenge Mode, with a red X over it.

Mii Icon

MSSUnusedMiiIcon.png

An unused Mii icon, found with the rest of the character icons.

Early Exhibition Mode Icon

Early Final (Japanese)
MSSEarlyExhibitionModeIcon.png SMSFBExhibitionIconText.png
MSSFinalExhibitionModeIcon.png

An early version of the Exhibition Mode icon, meant for the main menu.

The early version's icon is considerably smaller, and was changed in the final version to a birds eye view of a baseball field. The early version also has the text "Exhibition" in Japanese on top of the icon, while the final version has the text as a separate graphic.

Mii Select Text

Japanese American
SMSFBUnusedMiiSelectText.png MSSUnusedMiiSelectText.png

Unused text meant for picking a Mii, which translates to "Which Mii will you use?". The American version of this graphic is grayed out, and has 非使用 written over it, which translates to "Not Used".

Defence Control Text

Japanese American
SMSFBDefenceControlText.png MSSDefenceControlText.png

Unused text reading meant for training mode, translating to "Defence Control". The red text underneath doesn't seem to be any recognizable words or phrases in Japanese. The American version of this graphic is grayed out, and has 非使用 written over it, which translates to "Not Used".

Unused Duplicate Graphics

Many of the HUD graphics contain unused duplicates of some graphics that are used. These graphics include:

MSSMarioIconDuplicate.pngMSSMarioMugshotDuplicate.pngMSSMarioMugshotDuplicate2.png

Mario's icon and mugshot facing left and right.

MSSLakituIconDuplicate.png

Lakitu's dialogue icon

SMSFBMarioNameDuplicate.png
MSSMarioNameDuplicate.png

Mario's nametag when selecting him as a pitcher, both in Japanese and English.

MSSMarioStadiumLogoDuplicate.png

MSSMarioFireballsLogoDuplicate.png

And the team logo for the Mario Fireballs.

Stadiums

Mario Stadium

Sky (Mario Superstar Baseball)

MSSMarioStadiumGCSkyTexture.png

An unused sky graphic, with the top being dark blue, and the bottom being light blue, leftover from Mario Superstar Baseball. This can be found along with the textures for both the day and night versions.

Reflection Texture

MSSMarioStadiumDayUnusedReflectionTexture.png

An unused reflection texture, found within the textures for both the day and night versions. None of the parts of the stadium in the final versions use a reflection texture.

Scoreboard Hat

MSSMarioStadiumLeftoverHatTex1.png MSSMarioStadiumLeftoverHatTex2.png

Two textures of the scoreboard design leftover from the early night version of Mario Stadium, found along the textures for the day version.

Dirt Chalk

Unused Used
MSSMarioStadiumDayUnusedChalkTexture.png MSSMarioStadiumDirtChalkTexture2.png

An unused texture of the dirt with chalk, being darker and smaller. The final versions use a brighter, and bigger texture, being a transparent texture for the dirt on the sides of the chalk.

Early Footlight Shadow

Unused Used
MSSMarioStadiumLightsShadowUnused.png
MSSMarioStadiumLightsShadowUsed.png

An unused texture for the footlight's shadow found in the textures for the day version. In the final version, the texture for the footlight's shadow is part of the main stadium model, instead of being an additional texture added to the stadium.

Early Scoreboard Shadow

Unused Used
MSSMarioStadiumScoreboardShadowUnused.png MSSMarioStadiumScoreboardShadowUsed.png

Also in the day version is an unused texture for the scoreboard's shadow, being at a different angle and including shadows for the background barriers and poles. This texture is in the same style as the blue shadow textures for the beach house, and the footlight. The final version's texture is part of the main stadium model, instead of being an additional texture added to the stadium.

Interestingly, the unused shadow texture is actually casting a shadow of the early night version of Mario Stadium. The early scoreboard design with the Mario hat can be seen, as well as the borders and the dock cleats being next to each other, instead of on top of each other like in the final versions.

Stands Walls

MSSMarioStadiumDayGrayWallTexture.png MSSMarioStadiumDayRedWallTexture.png MSSMarioStadiumDayLightBlueWallTexture.png

Various wall textures found in both the day and night versions, being gray, red, and light blue. These were most likely meant for the stands in the background.

MSSPeachIceGardenStageLightTexture7.png

An earlier version of the castle stage light's textures can be found with the textures for the day version. Aside from being the same sizes as the used counterparts, the only difference is the texture compression throughout the light textures, as well as the light textures with the black backgrounds being brighter.

Unused Used
MSSPeachIceGardenUnusedStageLightsIngame.png MSSPeachIceGardenUsedStageLightsIngame.png

Above is a mock-up of what the early castle stage lights would've looked like in-game, where it appears brighter than the one used in the final version. Oddly enough, the early textures for the stage lights can be seen in the preview images for both the day and night versions.

Castle Stage Lights Shadow

Unused Used
MSSPeachIceGardenUnusedLightShadow.png MSSPeachIceGardenUsedLightShadow.png

An unused texture for the stage light's shadow, at a notably different angle. The color for the shadow in the early texture is dark blue, while the final texture is dark red for the bottom, and light green for the top.

DK Jungle

MSSDKJungleMapShopTexture.png

In Challenge Mode, the DK Jungle Map's shop has an unused graphic for a surfboard saying "Funky". This suggests that each shop was going to have a unique shop sign, instead of just saying "SHOP" for each map.

The surfboard can be seen in the games credits, where a screenshot of the DK Jungle map in Challenge Mode has the surfboard on top of the shop.

Wario City

MSSWarioCityMapSignTexture.png

The Wario City Map signs in Challenge Mode has an unused texture for a "Casino", which was reasonably removed.

Bowser Jr. Playroom

MSSBowserJrPlayroomStatueTexture.png

The body texture of the Bowser Jr. statue in Bowser Jr. Playroom has an unused graphic for the stomach. The statues' stomach in-game doesn't have a texture associated with it.

Playable Characters

Mario

Body Texture

MSSMarioBodyTexture.png

Mario's body texture contains a texture for the cuffs used for his gloves. This goes unused since the final game uses a separate texture for Mario's gloves.

Bat

MSSMarioBatTexture.png

In Mario's bat, there is a single dark-beige colored pixel on the bottom-left corner of the texture, the same color used for the handle in Mario's bat. The final game uses a separate texture for the bat's handle, making this part of the texture go unused.

Luigi

Body Texture

MSSLuigiBodyTexture.png

Similar to his brother, Luigi's body texture contains the entire texture sheet for his gloves. This goes unused since the final game uses a separate texture for Luigi's gloves.

Collar Texture

MSSLuigiHeadTexture.png

Luigi's hat texture includes a texture meant for his shirt collar, placed underneath the straps for his overalls and on top of the mouth texture. This texture is used in Luigi's model in past Mario games, but goes unused here.

Yoshi

MSSYoshiBodyTexture.png

All of the body textures for all of the Yoshi's have the eye texture, which goes unused since the game uses a separate texture for the eyes.

Only the original Yoshi's body texture is pictured above.

Baby Mario

MSSBabyMarioBodyTexture.png

Baby Mario's body texture has unused duplicate graphics for his eyebrows, eyes being open, halfway closed, and fully closed, and his hands. These go unused in the body texture since these texture all are separate textures.

Baby Luigi

MSSBabyLuigiBodyTexture.png

Just like Baby Mario, Baby Luigi's body texture has unused duplicate graphics for his eyebrows, eyes being open, halfway closed, and fully closed, and his hands. These go unused in the body texture since these texture all are separate textures.

Toadette

MSSToadetteBodyTexture.png

Toadette's body texture contains 3 multicolored pixels underneath her mouth texture. One black, one light blue, and one light yellow. While the yellow pixel is used for Toadette's vest, the black and light blue pixels go unused. These are leftover from Toadsworth's body texture, where it is used for his glasses.

Monty Mole

MSSMontyMoleBodyTexture.png

Monty Mole's body texture contains the texture used for his paws, which goes unused since a separate texture is used for his paws.

Bowser Jr.

MarioSuperSluggersBowserJrPaintbrush.png

The texture for Bowser Jr.'s paintbrush has unused graphics for the E. Gadd logo, the two spikes on the sides, and the blue ring around the logo. This is a leftover from the original paintbrush texture used in games such as Super Mario Sunshine, and Mario Power Tennis.

What's interesting is that the paintbrush model used in the Graffiti Runner minigame includes the unused graphics and has the parts modeled in-game, so it's a bit of a stretch on why it wasn't included in Bowser Jr.'s Paintbrush.

Pianta

MSSBluePiantaBodyTexture.png MSSRedPiantaBodyTexture.png MSSYellowPiantaBodyTexture.png

The texture for Pianta's body and grass skirt has the leaves texture used for the palm tree Pianta bats with. This goes for Red and Yellow Pianta as well.

Petey Piranha

MSSPeteyPiranhaTexture.png

Petey Piranha's texture has a texture for his belly button, but it isn't mapped anywhere in Petey Piranha's model.

Tiny Kong

MSSTinyKongHairTexture.png

The texture used for Tiny Kong's ponytails has a unused duplicate of her eye texture, below the ponytail texture itself.

Unused Used
MSSTinyKongHairTexture.png
MSSTinyKongEyeTexture.png

The eye in the ponytail texture depicts a slightly different design, with the pupil being brighter than the one used in the eye texture used in-game.

King K. Rool

Unused Used
MarioSuperSluggersKingKRoolScepter.png
MarioSuperSluggersKingKRoolScepter.png

The texture for King K. Rool's scepter has an unused graphic for a green diamond. This suggests that at one point in development, the blue diamond on top of the scepter was originally going to be green.

Unused Used
MSSKingKRoolUnusedScepterIngame.png MSSKingKRoolUsedScepterIngame.png

Above is a mock-up of what the green diamond would've looked like in-game, instead of it being blue in the final.

Mii

The files for the Female Miis have the belt texture leftover from the Male Mii model.

Other

Lakitu

MSSLakituModelTexture.png

Lakitu's texture has a few unused textures. First, he and his cloud has unused mouth textures. These go unused since Lakitu nor his cloud open their mouths, but this may have been planned to be used since Lakitu's filename is L_jugem (L_ being a prefix for the games low-poly models for the playable characters), suggesting that there was going to be a high-poly model that would have a fully modeled mouth.

Second, Lakitu's texture has unused graphics meant for his fishing rod, located next to his eye texture. This is the same fishing rod texture used in other Mario games, mainly the Mario Kart Series.
